Sigh of reflief

Whew!
I have to take a step back and breathe for a bit. I've been waiting on my shipment of crickets to come in for longer than I thought I'd have to. I ran out of meal worms Sunday and the local pet store has been out of them for over a week (really wish they'd step up their game here) and poor Lenny has been out of food since then. I didn't have the money for gas or time to go to the nearest big chain pet store (50+ miles N or S/about 45 mins drive time) that would have any crickets or worms so I was stressing BIG TIME!

But the crickets arrived while no one was home (big mistake on my part) and they were placed in the mailbox. The black ants went CRAZY! They SWARMED the tube! My mom, being the wonderful woman she is, found them and separated the crickets from the ants and killed all the ants she could. Several crickets escaped in the kitchen and a few were already dead before my mom got to them, a small price to pay for several weeks worth of food!

I'm just glad I don't have to wait till Friday when the pet store said they would get them in. Last week they said the same thing Tuesday when I went. I went the Friday they said they'd be in and they told me the next Tuesday they'd be in so I went Tuesday and they said Friday. Oi, what an ordeal.

I buy my meal worms. I hate crix. They only get them a few times a week. And my afts get them. But other then that I order my mealies by the 5000 and they last 3 months if I am lucky!

I order mealworms 3,000 at a time. My leopards are lucky whenever I decide to buy crickets and it isn't very often. All my geckos that used to be just cricket eaters all eat mealworms including my AFT. I still buy the AFT crickets about every 2 weeks.

That's happened to me.. Not the running out but the ants. I had an order either come early or late (I forget) and the mailman put it on the front door where tons of ants already had formed a line. That was stupid of him because of course they swarmed the box, killing some of the crickets. Usually they put them at the back door were there aren't usually any ants. Anyway.. Glad you were able to save most of them.

When I first started out I fed crickets. What a pain they were. I have been feeding only gutloaded mealies for 8 years now and love them. No chirping, escaping, stressing the geckos, running through the geckos feces, stinking etc... :)

i prefer the mealies and i would order them but i like to support the local pet store were i got lenny from. so i usually buy several containers of rainbow meal worms (each cup contains 100 count.) as soon as i noticed they were getting low i went to get more and they kept giving me the run around so i hurriedly ordered some crickets.
i usually get crickets every now and then as "treats"
shell get a couple crickets with her meal worms instead of a full meal of mealies.
but it looks like crickets are the main course for the next month and half.

I prefer to use mealworms, but unfortunately most of my adult leos prefer crickets, even though I bring up all the hatchlings on mealworms. A few months ago I made my regular order of 1000 crickets from New Hampshire to be shipped to me near Boston. Unfortunately the package was put on the wrong truck and ended up making a trip to Orlando. It took over a week to get the crickets and amazingly half of them were alive. The supplier was nice enough to send another shipment for free.

meal worms

I used to buy the mealies too but when the gas got so high my hubby figured it out and it cost me
45.75 for gas to pay $6.49 plus wear and tear on my truck. I learned real fast to raise my own worms. Those costs were figured when the gas first started to get high so now it's even worse! I all ends well though cause when I get to many worm and beetles my chickens get a real treat!
