Skinny Tail

I have a gecko that seems to be fine except he has had a very skinny tail since hatching. I took pics of him, and another gecko that was born the same day. Both are fed the same, and keep in the same basic set-up. All the other hatchlings I have all seem to be doing fine as well and are also all kept the same. The majority of my hatchlings are housed separately, and these two are not housed together, I just put them together for the bottom pic.

What I wanted to know is if this is normal? Does this happen to a percentage of hatchlings? Is it something to worry about? Or nothing to worry about at all?

Thanks, Nick

I have no clue.......cute hatchlings! If I were you, though, I would put him/her on Marcia's GGG slurry. It might help for the time being till you/the vet knows whats wrong. Yes, I would take the hatchling into the vet right away.

I thought Marcia’s slurry was more for geckos that don’t eat? He does everything perfectly normal, and doesn’t seem to have any “real” problems. It is just that his tail is skinny, and he isn’t growing as fast as the others. I was just wondering if it is something to seriously worry about, if not other abnormalities are present? I think I might just have the vet check his fecal for me though, just to make sure there are not parasites in him. It definetly cannot hurt, since the fecal samples cost me a whopping $0.00

Any other thoughts or suggestions are welcome!

Thanks for the response, Emily!

I know its for geckos that don't eat, but it might help him gain some weight if you include some of that into his diet every day. Its just a thought :D

I wish we got FREE fecal samples!! That's definitely a plus for you :main_yes:

If he is eating normally, then I would think he would gain some girth to his tail eventually.. but I don't know

maybe try alot of differant feeders. I have some female leopards that are having a hard time putting weight back on. I give them superworms and also 2x's a week I give them crickets as well. It seems to be helping.

Well I don’t have photos, but when I first posted this thread he was 2 grams, he has now gotten up to 5. That is a 140% of what he was when I started this thread!!!!!!!!! I’ll have to keep weighting him, and try to track his weight gain, but I’m glad he is doing better. He was actually 1 of my first 3 Leos I ever hatched.

Just wanted to keep everybody updated!

I dont know what you are feeding him but try to put some mealies in some repashy calcium it has a scent and flavor that stimulates feeding. Also feed it some crickets if its not eating try to hand feed him sometimes it just takes one hand feed and itll jump start them I dont know if you mist but it also may be dehydrated so misting it will give it droplets to drink up. Then if this doesnt work also maybe a warm bath just belly deep, then you should take it to the vet. or get a fecal sample its sad I hope some thing works for you its a beautiful gecko I' hope this helps you, good luck.

Okay, well as you can see (not sure how clearly) he is getting better, and is now up to 6 grams. This means he is gaining weight steadily, and should be fine. Thanks for your help everybody, I’ll let you know when he hits 25 grams, and when he hits 50 grams as well.

You know, I just noticed from the pics that his back legs look abnormal!
Small and skinny!!
Maybe some sort of genetic thing??

I had one like this last season--from a Mack snow project. I believe that she had not quite finished developing at the time of hatch--her tail and back legs were spindly--they seemed like they weren't fully grown... she's looks perfect now, she's a pet only, but she seems perfectly healthy. Good luck!
