Ahh ok, thanks Morgan. I still wouldn't use it unless prescribed by a trusted vet. An anti-inflammatory drug seems like an overkill in this case.

I agree. When I was working at... Errr... Petco, it was second nature to use metacam. There is no way that a chain store should ever have an "infirmary" or make uneducated people give animals meds. That job didn't last.

Usage of Metacam in reptiles is technically "off-label usage" so i'm impressed that ANY veterinarian would sign his or her name to that prescription...especially in a debilitated reptile as you describe.

To Sausage...we should talk. This sounds like something else was involved, Metacam or not. Metacam does NOT directly "cause" liver failure in an animal, especially if used correctly.

Impressed as in "unbelievable stupid" or impressed with the skill?? LOL Clyde is doing fine...I did NOT use the metacam as I didn't want to risk it, and I have used it for my dogs and was told that it can cause liver or kidney failure but only is overdosed.

@Holly Augmentin and Tetenus!! i should be good!

Don't trust just any vet... ask if they have experience. It was a good idea you came to the forum before the medication.

Actually Metacam is a drug used for reptile pain. Any drug used for reptiles is "Extra Label" and veterinarians are the only medical professional in the world that are allowed to prescribe medicine extra label. Metacam has been studied in reptiles and showed no physiological parameter changes or adverse behavioral problems. Maybe your vet knew more than you thought.

This link may help more. I don't know your leo, but that was a pretty vicious bite, especially for a leo. If he hasn't done that before then I would suspect he is in pain when you touch his tail. Metacam is an anti-inflammatory drug as you all have stated, but you are forgetting that it is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) just like most you probably take daily for a head ache. If your gecko is eating and drinking while on Metacam, it will only alleviate your leo's pain.

This vet was on a HerpVetConnection website..and when I walked in they didn't have a fish tank they had a tank with turtles. So I felt fine till he told me to get rid of the UTH and use a infared bulb on a stand, and asked if I could get my guy to eat greens?

DrBlack thank you...I guess I never thought of it that way. It was a rather vicious bite even for Clyde..he has bit me before but just left scratches. I did give him a dose this AM as the does on the link is 0.3mg is way higher then what the vet gave me 0.1mg.

I did get a referrence from a new friend on here of a tried and true herp vet a little farther from me. I used to actually go to this vets office to his partner just never knew he did Herp as well!

Thank you guys sooo much, this is why I love this forum!
