Some people have no control over their dogs....

So as most of you have probly seen, I have a 2 year old purebred female blue pit bull, she weighs in somewhere between 65-70 lbs. She's unbelievably sweet & is a very trustworthy dog around children & such and isn't even aggressive towards other dogs really.

Well, i recently moved into this old lady's basment (it's a mother-in-law suite type of thing) and she has 2 little white furry dogs (hell if i know what they are), they're probly about 10 lbs a piece. One is ok, not great but not a horrible dog. The other is a DEMON, it barks constantly, growls and bites. I come home and i make a noise downstairs and i can hear it growling through the floor. Just recently i had a couple incidents that have me very concerned. One time, my landlord came downstairs to ask me a question & the mean one snuck down by her. The minute it got downstairs it started barking and growling up a storm, she tried to grab it and it tried to bite her and all she does is "oh you stop it" in this very non-serious tone of voice, that of course doesn't phase it in the least. She ended up having to corral the damn thing using her shoe to get it upstairs. The next day i took my dog to the store with me and when i came home (i use the back entrance) the dog took off down the stairs and immediately got in Dharma's (my dog) face and even nipped at her. Dharma was on a leash & she of course was very well behaved about it. The stupid thing kept at it, trying very hard to instigate something with mine. I'm not afraid that it could hurt Dharma, she's outweighs the annoying thing by a good 50-60 lbs....i'm afraid sooner or later it's going to push her too far & something will go horribly wrong. If she wanted to she could break this thing in half w/out even thinking. I'm really not sure what i should do. My landlord is an old lady in her 60's, she's very much a know-it-all and thinks her dogs are perfect and all that jazz. I don't want to be mean, but i also don't want to end up seeing a dog get killed or seriously injured & end up something happening to mine. Has anyone had to deal with something like this before?

This is my dog in case you haven't seen.....this isn't some little chihuahua lol.

I've never had to deal with a situation like that but I would ask her if she has any ideas on how to keep the dogs separated. Maybe if you politely let her know that her dog is trying to follow you into your apartment she can think of a way to keep it inside. Good luck!

people assume that because they have small dogs they don't have to train them.. and that is wrong. I also have a Pittie, and foster for Pittie Rescue. And My Pittie used to get chased around the Doggy Daycare I Worked at.. By a ...teacup.. Pom.. :-/ LOL! :) AS funny as it sounds.. it was still not right. If it was our dogs *Pitties* Doing this.. we would have them taken away and called Dangerous

First of all, your dog is gorgeous!

I think that you definitely need to talk to her about it, and perhaps even put it in writing. If something does happen, and her dogs have been provoking your pit bull for some time, you need to have a way to prove that you tried to do something about it. It could potentially be a very expensive lawsuit for you because it's pretty obvious if there was a fight, your dog could do some major damage. And everyone always blames the pit bull. It's not fair, but it's reality.

Good luck, it doesn't seem fair that you have to deal with this.

I think you should find another place. Because if your dog does get ahold of that "oversized fuzzball", and the lady in turn takes you to coart, the judge can order you to have your dog put down. If it were me, I'd be watching the classified adds for another dog friendly home.

Totally agree, just b/c they're small them being aggressive isn't a problem. It's always the same excuse "Well they can't hurt anyone so who cares?" which is total crap. It really pisses me off b/c almost everyone who sees my dog is afraid & tells me the same type of wrong information like "You know that dog will turn on you" or something like that yes my dog is very loving, friendly & would NEVER intentionally hurt another being unless it attacked me, her or someone i was close to. People always tell me how i have a ticking time bomb with my daughter which just infuriates me. My dog LOVES my daughter & would do anything to protect her, she loves all children too. Yet, if you have some sort of glorified rat for a dog that is essentially a mini-chainsaw its totally fine b/c there isn't much damage they can inflict. I actually had to get onto my Dad recently about his own dog, he has a 5lb Pomeranian who is getting rather aggressive & my dad thinks its funny. I told him straight up that he's being a very irresponsible dog owner & the worst part was that he used to train dogs for the military. He used the same stupid excuse & i told him that i wouldn't allow his dog around mine or my daughter specifically for that. I don't like dogs like that & take a special interest in making sure my dog is as friendly as it gets. I coddled her from the day she came home with me, to the point where she is even a bit needy now lol. I'm always having to fight with her now b/c she doesn't give me any space, always laying all over me...which isn't the most comfortable thing when the dog weighs almost half of me haha.

Got a little off topic there, sry. Back to the main issue, i tried to breach the subject last night with my landlord. I was very nice about it, just saying that i was concerned that with the way her dog is, especially towards other dogs that it could start a fight & i don't want to see something go wrong considering the size difference between ours. She did seem like she was going to try & fix the situation but we'll see. I'm a "believe it when i see it" type of guy & find that most people say they'll do something & then never do it. Funny thing is, i really think my dog is afraid of her's.....she tries so very hard to get away from the little furry devil when it gets near her. Typically she tries to get behind me, which helps but that little bugger is faster than me lol. I hate saying something like this b/c its mean....but i'd really to punt that f'n thing about 60 yards in the air.

Thank you very much!

I did tell her that if it doesn't stop soon then she will need to keep the dogs away from mine & i would want it in writing. I basically said the same thing to her that you said in how no matter what i would be the one that got blamed due to the myths about the breed & size difference in the dogs. Hopefully this will resolve things.

Thanks, it's not fair but i guess it goes with the territory. I knew I was going to be getting into something when i adopted her as a puppy, especially with pit bulls being in the limelight even more thanks to Michael Vick (God i hate him), just sucks sometimes.

I'm considering it, trying to avoid it if i can but if it keeps up i will be. There are plenty of other places to live thats for sure.

It's sad that a lot of people don't understand that dogs are natured in the way they are treated and trained. Sure, pit bulls have fighting instincts, and they are one of the most easily trained to be aggressive, but I've known lots of people who have pit bulls that are some of the most gentle, loving dogs I've seen.

My brother and his gf have a pit bull they adopted as a full grown dog that was abused it's entire life. They have trained her to be gentle and she is very good around people and kids. They always put a muzzle on her when she's at the kids birthday parties and such, but it's more for the benefit of the people who have irrational fears of these dogs rather than because she would actually bite anyone.

A guy I work with had a similar situation happen with his Mastif. He was ordered to have the dog put down. I'm sure he's still not over it. I don't want to see that happen to you. Hope things work out for you, Jason! :main_yes:

I would much, much rather be in a room with a strange pit than almost any other breed of dog. Even (or perhaps especially?) the ones that are bred and trained to fight are very trustworthy around people. Look at their history- you needed to be able to get in there and pull a fully aroused snarling dog off of its victim and not get bit.

That being said- there is a lot of prejudice about the breed that is definitely not deserved. If you can't find a way to keep that little terror away from your dog I would highly suggest moving. Even with something in writing, if your dog kills that little stinker, you might be forced to put her down- even if it was completely not her fault.

Perhaps you could put up gates where this little dog is getting in? There are those nice ones that open up with a handle that your dog could probably jump over, but would serve to keep the little dog out.

Wow.. That's sad.. Imagine living on my block where everyone is scared to take their dogs out because of these two white pitbulls. I love all dogs and I adore pits a little more because of their bad rep but the man has no control over them. I think he might have raised them to be aggressive dogs since they tend to want to attack each other as they are being walked.

One day during the summer I was just hanging around the house looking out the window. A lot of people were out walking around, kids were playing jump rope and walking their dogs. This girl from across the street was around 15 years old with a little white maltese. The maltese was trained to be off a leash and she just walks with the dog. Anyway all of a sudden I heard a scream and the maltese running at the speed of light with the girl screaming and running right behind him. As I saw them coming around the building I saw one of the pitbulls was off the leash chasing them. Thankfully people in the building had the door already open and let her and her dog run in while the man TRIED to wrangle his pitbull. He almost let go of both of them. The man now only brings out his dogs early in the morning or very late at night and walks them in the MIDDLE of the street. If I knew him better I would call the ASPCA to atleast talk to him about his animals or check how they're being treated.

I would try talking to your landlord. Tell her about your comfort level with the little pouch from hell and try to explain your concerns. Your dog shouldn't be punished in the long run for being pestered by that little dog.

PS both of you have beautiful pit bulls.. I wish I could have one!!!

Little bad mannered dogs are the entire reason I had a set weight limit with getting a dog. If its not over 40lbs, I'm not interested. I adore my pit mix and he's the best behaved dog I've had yet.

Check your city and county laws on dogs. Where I live if I have my dog on a leash and either a dog or person approaches aggressively and shows means of attack and my dog attacks, he's defending me and will not be put to sleep as a vicious dog. I do have to maintain control of the leash though, the attack cannot happen out of leash ( 6ft) range.

And she is GORGEOUS by the way. I love her ears! I've always favored the blues, red fawns and black and whites of any colored dog.

I really appreciate it, I honestly don't know what i'd do if anything ever happened to her. It took me over 10 yrs to get over my last dog & i'm a lot closer to this one, it's as if i have another daughter.

I would totally agree with you, pits are not meant to be aggressive towards people in any way. If they are there is something seriously wrong with the dog. Aggression towards another dog is a different matter but that has nothing to do with people.

My landlord told me last night that if all else fails she will put up a gate thankfully to keep her walking dustball out. I'm still on the fence about the whole situation but if it means protecting my dog that's what i'll do.

Sadly this story isn't that unusual....Pitts are status symbols to a lot of people & only certain people should really be able to own them. Living in Atlanta, one of the dog fighting capitols of the world they're all over the place & it's the stereotypical person you would expect to see with them 90% of the time. Just b/c the dog looks "badass" doesn't make you a badass. I've gotten into with a few people already. I've had people ask me if i was going to crop her ears and fight her (as in they wanted me to) & I went off on them. I told the person "No, but i could cut your ears off & fight you in the backyard and see how far you get". He didn't think it was so funny haha. I get very angry when it comes to this stuff, to the point where I would throw down if necessary w/out hesitation.

I'm the same way, I refuse to get a dog under a certain weight. They're demeanor just isn't what i want in a dog at all....i find that they are much more defensive & neurotic than large dogs by far.

I'll have to look into it, it's tough to say....this state doesn't have a lot of animal laws really but there are a few. There is actually one city that has banned pitts altogether (Lawrenceville)....what i find most strange is if you go to the Lawrenceville animal shelter the vast majority of the dogs they're trying to adopt are pits....it's very sad to see.

This is dharma as pup...tell me that's not the sweetest face in the world.
