Geckos Ahhhhhh Yes

He was under a bright light for five years in his old home. I wonder if that had any effect on his eyesight, or if he just prefers the dark.

Hey, all geckos are supposed to prefer the dark for doing things.
.... as per description of below....But in my mind I see possible changes in
what is supposed to be in the wild, for reasons of self protection,
to confidence in many geckos in captivity. Many times this is a result
of more hand contact with your buddy. I find it to be a fact from tests.
IMO I feel that some captivity geckos in time move out
somewhat of the nocturnality instinct.........
Nocturnality is an animal behavior characterized by being active during the night and sleeping during the day. The opposite, diurnality, is associated with human lifestyle and most familiar animal species. The intermediate crepuscular schedule (twilight activity) is also common.

Along with some having perhaps more sensitive eyes than others
(as Albinos, BB, etc) we adjust for the gecko accordingly.
Shade part of the tank, a move to less light area,
feeding schedule, etc. for their but also our
enjoyment of the hobby.
Take care. HJ
