Technically my vet used sterile equipment. But she also had no issue with me using stuff at home. She taught me how to do it so I could manage it myself, at home, if there was more stuck or it happened again. I had to remove small bits of gunk a couple times after the vet visit, but now he's been gunk-free for months.
I would never have messed with the eye before seeing her (when I worked at a pet store someone brought in a leo who's entire eye had been pulled out by the owner! It was sick and the gecko needed to be put down). But now that she's shown me how, I wouldn't have any issues trying to remove more gunk myself. And if I can't do it safely, right away, then I'd take it to her and let an expert handle it.
