I noticed the other day that one of my AFT's had a prolapse of . . . well whatever prolapses from the vent of a female gecko. I made a really thick sugar solution in a tub and sat her in there for about 20 minutes yesterday afternoon. This morning it had gone back where it belongs. What a relief. I was anticipating spending tomorrow morning at the vet.

I can hazard a wild, uneducated, guess: since the sugar solution is hypertonic and is directly absorbed into the cells, it has two actions - the sugar helps the tissue not have to work so hard at getting fuel (and focus on the job of getting back to normal), and the high solution concentration helps the tissue retract as a matter of osmosis/diffusion/seeking tonic balance again.

I don't know for sure, but I think it's the same concept behind a glycerin syrup-vitamin C serum I have, it's basically sugarwater with vitamin c and essential oils, but it does visibly tighten up the skin a bit for a few hours...

any Biologists on board to explain for reals?

I'm not a biologist, but I've been told that sugar syrup, karo syrup and preparation H (for hemerhhoids) all have the same effect of shrinking the tissues which tend to swell when they prolapse and allowing them to retract.
