Superworms?

So i am thinking about making a switch from crickets to superworms for my leos. I want to do this because they (in my experience) dont die as fast as crickets. The timberline website says that superworms have a couple more percent of protien than crickets do. Is it ok to use superworms as a main diet?

Most of my adults have made the switch to superworms and do fine. Get a small number and try them out first to see if they like them.

ok thanks. Well i know they will take them it just never occured to me to breed them and use them as a main diet for my leos. I have read a little bit about how to breed them and stuff. It seems really easy especially because the beetles will just die off after they have laid their young. I also wanted to do that because i havnt had much luck with breeding crickets

Supers are a bit more difficult to breed than mealworms, but not all that much different. I breed both, and although supers take much longer to reach a size that is concurrent with feeding adult leopard geckos, they do produce well. I use an alternating schedule of mealies/supers/roaches, and I will say I have some leopard geckos who don't really like supers, and a few who don't really want roaches, and pretty much all of them will eat mealworms.

yeah i think that i will breed both the mealworms and superworms and see what happens lol.with mealies do u have to separate them so they will pupate?

No, meal worms will pupate as soon as they reach adult size if they are warm enough(room temps or slightly above). In fact, I store large mealworms in the fridge in order to keep them from pupating.

I made the switch from mealies to supers and it was great. Not all geckos like them, but the ones that do it is nice. You don't have to feed as many supers as mealies but Supers cost a little more. Supers take a long time to pupate and are harder to breed.

for some reason its been the opposite for me, the supers seem to be easier to breed, although more steps are involved. but my mealies have not been pupating. temps are good, and they are very well fed. i use the little plastic boxes at craft stores used for beads to seperate the supers and keep rotating them out as they pupate. its fine to keep the superworm pupae together, as long as you remove the beatles promptly when they change. i'll post some pics up tomorrow of my super and mealie breeding set ups.

I thought superworms were high in fat and are only supposed to be fed as a treat once in a while. Mine will not eat mealworms, I have tried several times. But he loves the superworms, how he knows the difference I dont know. So I alternate between crickets and superworms.....

some people swear by crickets and other mealies. you can use either one as a staple diet. I want to use them if i can successfully breed them. just to save me some money.
