survived our first case of prolapse

My two year old male Red Stripe - Proven Breeder has a good case of prolapse.. "Denzel"

Last night he was mating with our albino I noticed one bulge and he continued to lick\clean it for a rather long time compared to what I normally see. "Ahnold", usually cleans for about a minute or so and then moves on.. So when he hit about 10 minutes or so I got worried. Then I noticed the second one. I immediately soaked him in a heavy sugar solution which is lucky in my house because since finding out I was diabetic about a month ago our house has been cleaned out of any sugar items, except some powerade in case I drop too low.. Which is rare because I generally run very high since my pancreas is running at about 20%.

Anyhoo, after some sugar I ran up to Albertson's and bought some Karo corn syrup and soaked him in that for awhile. He was none to please with sitting in that sludge but his safety is my main concern. I stayed up with him until about 2am soaking him every thirty minutes or so; for about 10-20 minutes each session. Then again once this morning. I kept it warm by adding warm water every couple of minutes or so..

I kept him on very moist paper towels when I finally went to bed. This morning one seemed to go in, but when I soaked him it came back out. Which is probably due to the water and warmth. He pooped which is good. But just to be sure I ran him up to my herp vet.

They called me just a few moments ago and one is completely back in and the other is going in slowly. They are going to keep him for the rest of the day just to be sure and I'll pick up after work. My doc isn't going to charge me either!! Gotta love that guy.. I guess I'm going to let him win at golf again this weekend.. which isn't hard because I'm terrible anyway.

So of course my big boy is retired for the season and we'll be very weary next season with him.. But he's going to be okay which makes us very happy.

P.S. - I'm exhausted and walking around like a zombie; but it was worth it if he will be okay..

Not sure what's the better news--no charge or the good report. Kidding. I'm really happy for Denzel that he'll be taking the rest of the season off.

he did his deed for the season so were not too upset about retiring him until next year.. Ahnold did the rest of the work for him so we're all set for the rest of the season anyway...

Michael, I am very happy that you took him to the vet, and your vet is a good one! You are doing exactly what is needed with the syrupy sugar water soaks, and you can even apply the aloe vera-based Preparation H. Just make sure the other hemipenis stays red, and if it starts looking scabby or turns black, he may require amputation.

Well after a few more soaks last night the right one still was still out about 20% this morning. He got angry one time when I removed him from a soak and popped the right back out and pooped all over me.. That was fun.. From his standpoint he probably thought I deserved it.. LOL

Anyway this morning after another soak it was still out about 15-20% - so I brought him to the vet again and he let me watch him do a purse string suture. OMG - I'm not sure if any of you have ever seen one of these but it doesn't look very comfortable. It's basically a stitch in a continuous circle thats pulled at the end to tightened and tie it together like you to close a purse. Well little Denzel was looking right at me, (angry of course) and I swear I saw him squeeze his eyes and strain like someone after a very very large meal and take the biggest poo I've ever seen; all over my doc on my doc.. as well as pop tissue surrounding the suture and the hemipene came right back out! So he did another suture surrounding both sets of tissues and practically closing his vent. We figured he was about empty and after all his antics. We have to watch him over the next two days to make sure he defecates but somehow I'm doubting he'll have a problem...

So I guess for what is worth he got back at us for all the soaking and trips to the vet.

I've attached a pic of a purse string suture.. Just imagine someone doing that to your rear end!

the first thing i use on a prolapsed gecko is preparation H... it shrinks the swelling of hemorrhoidal tissue.... ok so it shrinks the swollen tissue so the hemipenes are able to retract back into the body. all the gecko or snake prolapses i have had i have used this with success. in the oder of what i do

1. warm water soak
2. hemorrhoid ointment
3. small warm enclosure with damp towels and high humidity.
(repeat process about every 8-12 hours)
* make sure to clean around the affected area very well using a cotton swab dipped in warm water

up to this point i have never had to take one to the vet or never had one not retract

did that exact same process which is funny before I brought him in the first time.

He actually popped it again last night so I brought him this morning just to be sure. My doc is weary about doing more sutures because thats more holes in his skin so he's going to manually put it back in and rec-close the suture and see waht happens through out the course of the day. I gave him the Preparation H to help continue bringing down the swelling. He's going to watch him and if he pops it again he's thinking about amputating. But he wants to do everything possible not to.

We shall see, but I trust my herp vet with full confidence that he will do whats best for Denzel. I'm hoping he won't have to amputate but often they can continue to breed with only one..

He'll call with updates throughout the day.

me too..

he's great, he owns a leopard gecko himself. Is as fascinated with them as we are. And does a lot of work with Leos and reptiles/exotics as a whole. Before he does anything he checks several articles, references, and even other doctors before he does anything before a procedure to make sure he gets the newest ideas and practices on anything. A truly great guy.

one thing i would worry about with keeping them at higher temp is the fertility of the male. i would think at a certain point the heat would start killing the sperm. something similar to men who go into hot tubs frequently or long periods of time.

his temp is controlled by a spyder robotics herp stat. I keep him between 88 and 89.5 - the only time I bump them up is they have respiratory problems or notice that their specific enclosure is running to low to allow good digestion. I test each enclosure with my temp gun weekly and every night with my hand when I place their bins back in the rack after breeding. I have two separate herp stats for shelves that control temps for males and females and those might have problems. I watch them like a hawk. They are like my children and I'll do everything in my power to make sure they live a long and healthy life.

Michael, glad to hear he is OK.:)

Since we are discussing, I think 90 dg. is perfect, in fact I wouldnt keep them at any temperature lower than that.:)

Hi all!

Do you know what is it exactly? How can I help for her?
I cleaned her with water soaked qtip, than creamed with emollient. Put her into a container filled with water soaked paper towels.

The photo was taken one hour after the treatment.
