Taking Gecko Out of Tank - First Time. Help?

So, as a few of you know, I've had quite a few 'problems', that ended up being nothing but misunderstandings in my case. =P

Well, my gecko actually 'likes' me now. He/she tolerates being help for quite awhile, and is much more willing to explore after much work with him. Yesterday, every time I walked past his tank, he'd climb up high, and scrabble at the glass. Which makes me think, he's getting restless, or whatever.

I want to take him out, but the only place he's allowed in is my bedroom. So, I have questions for you to make it as safe as possible for my little Gwynn. =3

1. What should I do to keep him away from things like under my bed, dresser, desk, door, etc? I don't want him getting lost.
2. What if he jumps? I'll be sitting on the ground, but I don't want to hurt him. Should I put something like towels or blankets under me?
3. I'm thinking I should probably sweep first, right? =P I don't want him getting sick or dirty, though my room isn't bad.
4. Can I let him climb around on me?
5. For the first couple times, just to make sure he doesn't get under anything, should I put maybe just a few pieces of wood or something to keep him getting away if he decides to jump and make a run for it?

Okay, kudos to you if you read all of that. =P But really, I think it's time to take him out, and I just want your guy's help. ^^

I have 4 dogs so I do a lock down everytime I open a cage :p I Make sure I shut the door and lock it, just so no one can open it up and let the dogs in. If I want to acctaully hold them and let them crawl around on me I sit on my bed so it's a soft landing to a fall.

8D Thank you. I have a small dog and a cat, so the door and window will be closed. xD uhm, one question. My bed is right beside the wall. =\ So there is a crack there. I don't want her to get underneath the bed through there, I'll never find her. What could I put along the edges to keep her away from there?

Usually Leopard Gecko's do not jump when walking around on me. You can walk around with them on your shoulder and 9/10 they will not fall off they have good grip.

They do like to explore so you could crumple up a blanket and put it in the middle of the bed and let them explore that or just let them crawl on you, both fun. : )

Well, I took him out today, and he was amazing! I put a few stuffies out and a purse open on the side, and he climbed in, on and around everything xDD

Wow I like how devoted you are at protecting your baby. Kudos to you!! When I brought my babies home I would place my hand inside the tank EVERYTIME I walked by, and after about a half a day of doing that they climb right up onto my hand and up my arm. They will hang out with me climbing into my shirt pocket, and or down my shirt. I think they like the warmth of my tummy.

Grats on your first "play time" with ur gecko :D

I was kinda unlucky in that the first gecko i got has a death wish :( He is seriously crazy. He's not scared of me in the slightest but u gotta have eyes in the back of your head with him. He has a habit of trying to launch himself off things, hiding in places he shouldnt, walking backwards off me, you name it he will try it.

Then i was blessed my 2nd one is an angel :) She was tame from the day i got her and has never been a problem :) She is really calm and sweet :)

I have 2 cats so safety is a must so we shut them out, try to block up any "hiding" places, even block up the gaps at the bottom of the door. Make sure the floors are totally clean and i even make sure im not covered in cat hairs as geckos tend to lick you and ur clothes.

Also hygene is important so make sure you wash your hands before and after handling them so you dont give them anything or get anything in return, i have read they can carry salmonella so its important to just be careful :)

Other than that just enjoy your time with them :)

hey it's possible, i had a lady come into my work to buy some stuff for her sons new gecko and was like oh yeah i killed the last one, she insisted it needed to get some fresh air and left if outside and everyone told her it wasn't such a good idea and she forgot about him, and he baked.... so yeah

OMG leaving the poor thing outside!!!

And i guess in a weird kinda way im lucky i got a suicidal one for my first...you learn just how careful and paranoid you have to be.

One time i was sat on the couch with him and he loves running on the cushions...well this day he decided it would be fun to dash under the gap where the springs are and into the couch.

We had to get him out by slashing the back of the couch as he thought it was fun to climb in it when we tried to move it to get him outta the bottom. He was absolutely fine and a bit miffed when he got put back in his viv but i was in a right state :laugh4: We put towels and stuff on the couch now just to cover any gaps and he still tries to dig into it :p

Regardless of his attempts he is still very much alive and kicking and i love him to bits :D

Thank you! =3 Yea, I would be devastated if he ended up getting away or hurt, because I have a dog and two cats in the house. Every time I put him back, he scratches at the glass. :main_rolleyes: So I let him climb around on the desk until he wants back in again. xD

He still isn't totally sure about climbing around on me though. I can pick him up fine and stuff, and he won't run or anything, but he'll like try to walk right off my hand. :p Luckily my tank is right by, because it's quite hard to keep a good grip on a wiggly little reptile. xD

Yeah, we let our guys run on the couch too. There's been plenty of times where I take one downstairs with me, and we'll curl up and watch a movie or something. God knows how many times I have to tell them "No running in the house!"...it's now an inside joke. lol.

They also enjoy play time on the bed. I'll usually pile up some of the blankets, then stretch out and let them explore. They love the pillows for some reason...

We've also had to deal with suicude jumpers, or as we put it aspiring sky divers... you name it, Loki, Hera, and Dante have probably launched themselves off it. Dante used to tumble and bounce alot... there were times I actually wondered if he had brain damage after taking so many falls head first. The other two aren't as bad, but I threatened Loki last night with selling her to Geico as the gecko's stunt double. Didn't help. lol.

As long as you keep a close eye on you're little one, you should be fine.

Wow! Rythm is soooo calm compared to all your guys! I just let her run around on my bed or on the couch. I also have two dogs and three cats... the cats aren't really a problem, I simply just don't let them see her if I'm holding her, but they get booted if she's running around. But one of my dogs scout, will not leave my room at night and he loves Rythm! Once he discovered she existed, I swear for a month he sat at the end up my bed allll day and night staring into the tank. They had lot of staring matches! But Rythm will even climb around on Scout! I just don't turn away for even a second in case he were to roll over or anything, but they love each other!

Awwws. xD You're lucky you dog loves your LG, Rythm. xD I want to take my gecko into the living room, but my mom said he has to stay in my room. xD Ah well.

Actually, I think my gecko is a girl. xD But I call it a he anyways. But, she's getting better. I held her up to the webcam today to show a friend, and she/he just sat there. =3

Ok, first off, that tiny font is really hard to read... ANYWAYS, yes she can climb on you, my Kirsa does it all the time. & yeah, a little sweeping of the area she will be walking around in would probably be best. & if she jumps, it will be fine, like say she decided to jump off your bed, unless you have a tall bed, it would be ok, but may still wanna check her over. Leopard geckos are pretty tough, Kirsa jumps all the time & just kinda looks around like "whoa, that was fun" & then just goes on about whatever. I think she does it just to scare me, turd... But as long as the drop is not to high she should be fine, even though its scary to us (they probably get a kick outta scaring us)... To keep her away from things, the best thing is to just watch her & when she starts getting to close to something, just pick her up & set her back on your leg, or where ever.
