What about just using a large clear Rubbermaid for now? That's what I did while I was in college and couldn't lug heavy tanks around. They are cheap, roomy, and easy to heat. If you live in a cold area, you could clip a heat lamp on top and use a T-Rex Cobra underneath. Or, you could create levels in your 10-gallon tank by just throwing together a stable platform that the gecko can climb on or sleep under. Good luck! :)

I would just get a nice piece of rectangular tile and silicone some "legs" on each corner. I think you can find something at Home Depot. Make very sure that it is steady and won't fall on your little guy. The platform should only be about three inches off the ground, thus making it more stable, easier to climb on, and nicer to hide under. :)

I have a second level in my 20 gallon, which you could adapt for a 10 gallon:

4 "legs" which could be made from dowels, at least 1" thick, cut the same size and straight. I actually made 4 ceramic legs by wrapping clay around a dowel (and then removing the dowel)

2 12"x12" (or smaller) tiles; 4 1"x1" tiles (from the bathroom section at Home Depot)

1 mini UTH (Zoomed makes a UTH for 1-5 gallon tanks)

Set up the 4 legs in the tank so one leg is at each corner of where the tile will be --I didn't glue the legs to the tile so I could take it apart and it's very stable.
Place one tile upside down (finished side facing the bottom of the tank) on top of the legs; place the 1" tiles at each corner; put the mini UTH on top of the tile and cover with the second large tile rightside up. THis way you have a space for the UTH and for the heat to ventilate. I find a UTH of that size maintains a reasonable temp without a thermostat.

I make my upper level more like 6" high so I can fit hides below it and still reach in. I use a thick log placed diagonally and anchored by my lay box, or a hide that's tall enough in the right place for the geckos to get "upstairs". They've all figured it out and take turns up there. The whole thing is pretty cheap except for the UTH which you can often get at a good price on ebay.

Check out Freecycle.org. It's like craig's list that someone else mentioned. You'll need to find a group local to you. I've picked up a couple of tanks there. Yes, it's ALL free. People offer stuff they don't need. People put out requests for things they do. I'm pretty sure free works for college students;)

I am in 5 freecycle groups. The only tanks I have found are 10 gal and a 55 gal. I have gotten some other stuff though. I love freecycle.

Sounds like it's time to post the wanted. I'm sure someone has one in their cellar. We had our fishtank crack at our Halloween party & I posted at 2 a.m. out of desperation. The next morning I had more than 5 offers. All the fish lived :) Good luck.
