I'm not a teen...it's been so long since I've been one that I barely remember! Actually, I'm the one with the bigger reptile obsession than any of my kids. My oldest son had two bearded dragons and a leopard gecko. I fell in with them, and I guess I caught his obsession. Now, all but two of our kids are really into reptiles (and those two freak out over the crickets!!!) My 17 year old step son wanted a ball python forever...so we got him one for christmas. HE is totally responsible for all of his care, but I know that when he moves out or goes to college, I will probably assume responsibility for him as well.

I think it's a good idea for parents to encourage reptile keeping in their children. My 8 year old has already learned so much responsibility and compassion. He has watched them go from eggs to hatchlings to adults and is already talking about getting his "own" leo or bearded dragon for christmas. I know that he will take good care of it, because he knows all the basics and helps care for mine all the time. LOL...I already have 9 reptiles of my own, how can I possibly say no? I consider it a good learning experience, and I will be here to help guide him along.

I blame MY parents for this. When I was growing up, pets were "too much bother", so we never really had any. Both my older brothers also have a large number of pets. We are all animal lovers, we just weren't allowed to have any when we were growing up.

So, all you teens...just prove that you are serious, and most of all, responsible. That will be your biggest bargaining-chip in the long run.

This reminds me of myself. I wasn't allowed to have the animals I wanted as a child. Now I have a few hundred leos, boas, ball pythons, and bearded dragons. We just added veiled chameleons. :D

My son is spoiled. He is 15 and has three pixie frogs, two pet rats, 3 dumpy tree frogs, a fish tank, and a red ear slider. However, he is very responsible and give them very good care. He even cares for many of our boas and ball pythons.

It's weird, because there really was a void there from not being able to keep any other animals besides a dog, but at least Mike and I share and can fill that void together :) I can see us getting some snakes in a year or two :)

That's a lot of reptiles!! Very awesome Larry, I'm glad to hear your son is very responsible :) :D :main_yes:

I actually just asked about breeding leos, and to my suprise they were both supportive, so I'm in the market for a female! Yay!:p Can't wait!

Thats great!!!! I'm pretty sure my parents will let me breed geckos. I don't see why they wouldn't, but sadly, we don't think the same way. We're in the process of moving, and they said we'll see once we're settled, but they said yes to a gecko, so I'm hoping they'll confirm the yes to breeding that they put on hold until after the move.

If you think you're responsible enough at that age to have a pet of your own you should be able to pay for all its needs (vet, food, health, habitat, +the extra electricity expense on your parents.) At that age I had animals but they were "family" pets, in other words my parents adopted them for us but assumed full responisbility for them.

After a year on my own I moved back in with my parents at the end of last year to help with finances. There was a period of 2 months where I didn't have a job and had trouble paying for the feeders where they helped me out (but with meal worms it wasn't but about $10 for the period) and I have since then paid them back.
I never wanted my parents to have to take care of her but there are times where you just cant help what happens. So look out for those periods and plan ahead for them.

I would never have gotten a pet without my parents' permission several years ago when I was in highschool. So I think that getting a pet without telling them when you are completely their responsibility (as most kids are in highschool or under) is not the smartest thing to do as it is their house and you have to live by their rules. Even if you have the means to take care of it and its expenses.

My mom doesn't let reptiles in her house. herps, rats, ect are band(sp?). i could have a turtle, but a) the cage would have to be huge and b)i have medical reasons for not wanting one. mom tried, she really, really tried, but it just wasn't working for her. so i said that i'd wait until i moved out. i'm hoping that in a few years she might let up and say yes, but i doubt that'll happen.but she did say she'd still come to my house even if i do have a leo:main_thumbsup: (or more than one.......:main_evilgrin: ) then i occurred to me a week ago that even if i couldn't get a leo, i could still come on here and bother y'all:main_laugh: :main_yes: :main_evilgrin: :main_thumbsup: !

My mom and dad have fallen in love with my current leo, and my teachers leos(2) so they dont have a problem with them. Mom says I can get another leo on three conditions: 1) it is not a male, so it can go in the tank with my other leo 2) We can get my current leo to live for more than a year. I have lost 4 babies, and we don't know why. It wasnt that we were doing anything wrong, but they died from sickness. At the time, we didn't know about the UTH's, but we did have a heat lamp. I wonder if that had something to do with it? :main_huh: 3) I pay for it. Anyways, I have 3 leos total at my house (look up) all females and they are the morphs below(signature). My family has fallen in love with all of them, and mom is the one who buys crickets. It is only about $1.00 something every two weeks. It is going to get more expensive now that summer is here and their matabolism is speeding up lol. Good luck to mom! :D

At our house I have the opposite problem!!! Our 2 teenage sons are always griping about all our reptile tanks and bugs bins, LOL. My older son graduates in 2 days and as soon as he leaves for college, I have BIG plans for that empty room, LOL:main_laugh:
