Temperature question

Hey all, got my first Gecko in the mail today. Deciding on names, but pretty sure I'll name the little guy Fingolfin if it's a boy. Anyway, I'm concerned with temperatures. I have a heat mat under one side of the tank, but I'm confused about how you're supposed to measure the temperature. When they say the hot spot should be around a certain temperature, are they referring to the ambient air in that area? Or the temperature directly on the bottom of the tank? No one seems to explain where the temperature is supposed to be. Thanks for the help. I have no pictures yet because the little guy is hiding and settling in.

You should be measuring the temperatuer on the floor on the hot side, not the ambient temp. Best to use a digital thermometer with a probe. You can get a "reptile thermomter" at most pet stores for less than $10.
