The problem with Codoms is that it's so easy to reproduce in a short amount of time. Which means their are more chances for individuals who don't care about the market to ruin it. If you look at the prices of Spiders & Pastels compared to just 2-3 years ago, they've dropped tremendously.

A good example with Leopard Geckos is the Mack Snow. Just last year, what were they selling for? $750-1000? Within a year, you can now get them for $75-100! That is insane. I am very glad I didn't jump into Macks last year, I would have been ticked spending that much money on an animal to not even be able to recoop my purchase price.

How about MKR's $800 Mojaves! I like co-doms so much because they can be reproduced quickly and you can make double-dom morphs just as easy. If I ever get into BP morphs it definitely won't be to make money. To me they're like living art!

MKR isn't looked on to kindly by the BP community due to what they do to the market, so I wouldn't bring their name up as a positive comparison. ;)

Yes, they are very, very beautiful animals...But the average person doesn't spend $10,000 on a single animal just because it looks pretty. It's an investment.

How would you feel if you just dropped a couple grand on an animal with the intention to recoop the purchase the following year & a non-name came up the following season and sold them for a small precentage of what they sold for the previous year?

Sadly, not many people think of the consequences surrounding their actions, THOSE are the people who are in it just for the buck.

LOL! I was being sarcastic about MKR... I think it's BS... Anyways, I don't plan to get into them unless I win the lotto or hit big at the casino. So I wouldn't be concerned about the prices. :D :main_yes: ;)

Oh yeah, all I can say is BUZZZZ!

It's true a lot of people flooded the market and when they couldn't sell their pastels/mojaves/spiders in a couple weeks they dropped the selling price lower and lower and lower and LOOOOWWEEERRR. Super pastels used to cost $20,000!! I don't even know what the going rate is on them now..

The great part about them is mixing these traits with recessives. Recessive traits have held their value fairly well with ball pythons. Albinos are still over the $1000 mark and they've been around for a while.

I've got a pastel male that's het ghost i'm breeding to some normal females this year. Trying to get my foot in the door and then i'm only gonna be buying recessive traits.

I've seen Super Pastel males under 2k and females under 4k... :main_lipsrsealed:

You're so right about recessives. Good luck on your future projects.

I feel bad for anyone who bought a super pastel at $20,000. It's gotta be painful to look at the classifieds 2 years later seeing them at $2,000. I personlly am a big fan of of the ghost crossing into other morphs. The honeybees, ghost pastels look awesome. Has a ghost pinstripe been made? I dig the pin. Lav. albinos and piebalds are sweet too.

Try 10-15 years. The BP people are very good at keeping their market balanced. Their are a few that sneak between the cracks, but not many.

well though you have to consider that BP's do not have large clucthes and it takes a few years to get one to breeding size. thats why some of the morphs have kept such descent prices of the past years. its not a year roll over like geckos can be.

Leopard Geckos do not have large clutches either when compared to other reptiles. I however still do not see that as an excuse for what happened with the Macks. ;)

Well put it this way. You get one mack snow one year and the next year you are producing them! That is fast lol. If Enigmas are the same i do fear them becoming the next macks but hopefully not. But at the same time i hope one day ill be able to get one *hehehe* So i guess you take the good with the bad and roll with the punches. At least thats what I've been told.

Recessives and combos are what are going to hold their value in the BP market.
MKR. Man, I HATE what they did. Glad they are out of business. They didn't even have the mojaves or lessers they advertised which caused problems in the market.
Pastels are dropping but that is because most of the inexpensive ones are just plain crap. Hardly anyone one breeds pastels selectively. Too many just bought a pastel and bred it to as many females as possible. 90% of the ones on the market now would never get into a tub here. I am very selective when choosing animals as future breeders.
Albinos, clowns, axanthics, ghosts, pieds, etc are going to hold value because they can be crossed with amazing results.
Take for example the spider. No super form so the price dropped but look what happens when you cross it with a pied or a axanthic. WOW.
The prices are still a bit steep but I don't think you'll see something like an albino ball in petco for at least another 10 years.
There are still good deals to be found on BP morphs. It just takes a lot of persistance.

You're right... My ethics have improved since I made this post and I wouldn't do this again.

However, the edit button doesn't seem to be there because the thread is so old. If you want you want you can ask a mod to delete this thread.
