Coming up on Sunday 8/29, the Maine Herp Society 10th annual reptile expo. It's a smallish show and less overwhelming than some of the bigger ones. I'm vending there for the 4th year, I think. Here's the link:

I hope you'll do more vending than venting and I hope I make it to Portland instead of Porland (I just read my title again. It's embarrassing for an editor to make a typo).

Well my first show was a lot of fun! It went well people really liked my animals! Very happy on the feed back! Cant wait for the NH show in October. Met Stephen from the forums thanks for the complements!

Had one event happen of an animal coming back to me after... i think an extreme change from indoors to outside heat/light extreme. It dropped its tail and mouth agape *crested gecko* people where understanding and I offered full refund or another crestie. The tailless one is actually hopping around fine in a cage back at my home. Poor people I felt horrible poor girl was almost in tears. :-( If she ever contacts me ill tell her that she didn't kill the little guy/girl she is doing just fine just a little nubby now HAHA!

I had a good time at the show too even though the sales were terrible. Hopefully things will improve.

They stressed it till its tail dropped and overheated it...

... what exactly were they understanding of? It was their damn fault, not yours. They should have accepted responsibility and you shouldn't have given them anything except a chewing out for being negligent.

It really pisses me off that someone will buy a perfectly healthy animal, not protect it from overheating, then expect the seller to do something about it. Here in Florida, if you buy a baby cornsnake, carry it out to the car in a clear deli cup with the sun beating thru it while you admire your purchase, it will die in less than 10 min. So now we feel it is our responsibility to educate customers on the care of getting their animal home. They often don't realize the seriousness of the heat factor unless specifically told, due to their lack of experience.

i was telling all my customer to make sure and keep their purchases out of the heat and sun. it's just too hot. they (the show promoter) has signs on the doors and walls about the heat and sunlight and to keep your reptiles out of it. i have never seen up to Maine but i would imagine the temps are much cooler and its not something that someone thinks of. in 100 degree temps you cant stress it enough

I have to say i was dumbfounded when they came back with the animal... I was like WHAT HAPPENED!?!?! walked out to the hall where the young girl was with it and noticed as soon as i walked out of the room the temp swing... She said she opened the container to hold it. I just felt so bad my first show and this happened. I was probably just as panicked as her. Mother was assuring me it couldn't have been the temp. Looked and it was exactly 85 outside and it was a clear deli cup so i could only imagine they bought it right around 12-1 opened it in the car to hold it and car was probably REALLY HOT and the air temp of opening the deli cup to car heat probably shocked it right then and there. They did tell me when they came back for another gecko that they couldn't get the car cool so they had a container with cold water bottle in it. I warned them that it cant stay on the water bottle because too cold is just as bad as to hot. They have all my contact info so i hope this 2nd one made it home with out a hitch. Guess that will be my new warning to people with high and low temps and cars.

If they opened the cup to "hold" a jumpy baby crested, there's a chance that more happened than they're telling you, like it got away and they had to chase it down so it dropped its tail. Besides that, it was air conditioned in the expo room and probably closer to 90 outside (New England is having an "August regret" heat wave) with high humidity.
