Brian! Thanks for that info. I am going to work on the pictures more this weekend. I have thee bulbs that I bought a while ago and haven't used, they are called "Reveal" and it says on the package that it makes pictures whiter. It actaually shows 2 pictures on the packaing, one using the Reveal buls, and one using regular bulbs. The regula bulb picture is yellow, and the reveal picture is whiter. Hopefully these will help too

Yup... the bulbs probably have a color temperature right on the packaging. From the following image, you'll see that light bulbs are more on the orange side (about 2800K), where the specially made 'daylight' bulbs run about 5000K (much whiter):

Depending on the software you're using, you might be able to adjust the color temp, in which case you could move the slider to match the lighting that was available when the photo was taken, making the whites looks nice and white :)

I swear the amount I've learned about light and photography in the last year is really ridiculous... and I know only a fraction of what some people do. I use FredMiranda.com quite a bit for photography discussions, and I'd strongly recommend it to anyone looking to learn more

The bulb is almost like a purple color. It says on the box "Enhanced Color Spectrum" and A 19, not sure what that means.

I will definately check out that site!

Jeanne- I have used the reveal bulbs
They do make for more natural lighting
I got tired of having a yellowish cast to my gecko pics using regular incandescent bulbs and bought them a while back
Those are some really nice geckos and the pics are really nice too
:D

The enhanced color spectrum probably means that it emits a whole group of temperatures covering a range (which is more natural anyway). And definitely check out fredmiranda... there are some VERY smart people over there.

I usually do one above, and one on the left and right. If i have another lying around I'll do one from the back as well, but it depends on lazy I get.

Ok, I have been playing with settings for an hour now and my pictures still look crappy. Here is what my pictures look like when trying to adjust the white balance. Could the position of the lights have anything to do with it?

It starts at .3 then up:

Also, in my other pictures in this thread, I used "InstaFix: in my imaging software. It actually just made my pictures brighter.

Without Instafix:

With it:

it's an exposure compensation rating. When taking a photo like this, the camera tries to make every 18% gray. Normally, this isn't a problem in regular photos because it averages out. It's a problem with white however, since there is more white, so you need to set the exposure compensation to adjust for this. It's usually called 'EV' (not sure what the abbreviation is for), and you would want to set it to about +1 or +1.5 to let the camera know that the camera should average to a brighter color, thus making more of the background blow out. What camera are you using for these?

Yup, instafix is adjusting the EV value after the fact by adding brightness.

Here's an example of what it should look like (the adjusted white balance anyway). The original is on the left
