Thoughts on Male rejections

What do you mean by rejections? Is he just not breeding? Whats his age and weight?

You can sometimes use the scent of another breeder male to stimulate a seemingly uninterested male to breed. Lots of tricks but really if he is of weight and age and she is receptive there shouldn't be much problems.

Good to know for when I have a difficult male breeder!

Sorry I miss spoke. It is late here. It is the female that is rejecting the male.
Both are proven breeders. Female is a bit bigger than the male. She is about 90g and he is 70-75g? I have used the paper towel trick to transfer the males smell into the females enclosure. I checked the females belly, she looks to be ovulating.
Every few days I put them together. The male attempts breeding (tail vibration and tries to nibble the females tail). Female raises up and waves her tail about. The females tail wag is not slow, its more like when a gecko waves the tail as a distraction to get away from a predator (this seems weird to me). They do not fight at all other than the male gets a few whips in the face by the females tail. I let the male walk around in the female enclosure, reinforcing his scent (he does the thing where he kind of drags his back end I assume to get better contact with his pores) for a few minutes and then separate them.

I have done this a few times... maybe 4-5x with this pairing and get the same reaction every time.

She just isn't ready for him yet. I would give it a few days in between attempts because you don't want to stress the female out.

I know this is probably a bad question for you....but are you sure she is ovulating? I only ask because sometimes we see false ovulation and try introducing as well. Either way, good luck on getting them to pair up for you soon.

It is hard to tell because she is so thick in the middle. >_<
It is probably too early in the season. You are probably right. I will give it more time. Thanks Travis!

How can you tell when a female just will not take to a particular male? I know it is not very common but it does happen doesnt it?

I have only ever had one female do this. The only way i knew was because she was DEEP in ovulation and refused the male entirely for over a week. I figured it may be the male so I switched him out. Was but ten seconds and he was locked with her without any complaints. That male (that was rejected) was a proven breeder and continued to breed with other females that year.

Its still early. I have only had 8 females begin to ovulate. They are early seasoners every year though so its to be expected with them.

I've been convinced many times that certain of my females were ovulating or even gravid and it was just fat pads. I think the idea of waiting a bit is a good one. I don't even put my leo males and females together till early or mid-Jan and don't expect anything before Feb. If the female isn't actually attacking the male, it's also an option to leave them together for a few days. Some geckos need more time. I keep my breeding colonies together throughout the season so it isn't as much of an issue for me.

Thanks Aliza, that makes me feel better. I dont feel so much like I am loosing my mind :)

Yeah, I was experimenting to see if they would ovulate/breed early. For the most part it failed. Only 1 female bred for me. The other 7 are not ready. Owell!

Im always afraid of lost tails and scars so I dont keep my leos together.

I've had success putting a piece of paper towel from the males tub into the females. I think it gets them used to their scent and if they aren't ovulating it can stimulate them. It's worked for me a couple of times.
