Ceramic tile is my favorite substrate. Go to a place like Home Depot and check out the flooring section. Start with 12" square ceramic tiles with a little bit of texture. The totally smooth marble-like tiles are too slippery. I use beige ones that are the cheapest I can find (less than $2 a tile). The 20 gallon is 12"x30", so it will be two 12" tiles and then you'l have a 6"x12" space to cover. In order to do that you can either have a tile cut to size, piece the area in with smaller tiles, or use repticarpet for just the last 6". There is no need to put anything under the tiles. They conduct heat well.
