Two Geckos

My fiancée has been wanting to get another leopard gecko. But Dora has been alone for two years now, and I always thought if you introduced another gecko of smaller size then Dora would kill it. We have no access to breeders, only pet shops here. We do have a specialty reptile/amphibian/arachnid store. But the only sort of gecko we could get would be a baby, and it wouldn't be sexed when we could buy it. We don't have room for two separate tanks as a permenant thing. Dora's tank is massive, there is definitely enough room for another if I wasn't so concerned about them not getting along.

How do you go about introducing another? Do you need to find one the same size and sex? Do you need to put one in a smaller cage inside the bigger cage for them to meet with a glass barrier? What happens if they do fight? Is it something easily broken up? And is acceptance instant or is there a dominance battle??

Thanks. He really want's another....when he didn't even want the first one! I do believe he is getting addicted to geckos :)

I should also state her tank is 60 gallons. And we are 90% sure Dora is female, she was so unhappy when we tried to look she wouldn't stop whipping around and it was really hard to see. I know you can't do two males.

Here's the general procedure for introducing new geckos:
--any new gecko needs to be quarantined from your other geckos (in another cage) for at least a month
--the general rule is to house geckos that are the same size. I have successfully housed geckos that are different sizes but it's most important not to house adults with babies. In that case the size difference is too great and the need for food is different as well
--assuming you have 2 adult geckos and they have been quarantined from each other and you're ready to introduce them:
Make sure you have 2 females
clean out the cage that they will be sharing
rearrange the furniture a bit
make sure there is more than 1 hide per gecko so they have a choice
put the 2 geckos in and watch them carefully
It's not unusual for the gecko(s) to wave their tails slowly at first and possibly to even approach the other gecko. They should settle down after awhile.
Watch for signs of bullying: one gecko losing weight, looking scratched up or bitten; one gecko constantly sitting on the other. This is usually not cuddling, it's bullying.

I have been fortunate to be able to house my geckos in small groups with virtually no problems. That may work out for you too, but you will need to have a second set up just in case,

I have everything I need for a second set up except I would need to buy another UTH. It's just the room is an issue. I'm okay with one gecko...but if my fiancée just has to have another I want to make sure I am full of the do's and dont's of it.

Im guessing shes a girl since it is a 60 gal it would be fine to get another one. Try to get another girl. You can order geckos from dealers it would be stressful for the gecko

Looks like a healthy tangerine. If you choose to get another (female), be sure to quarantine her from the current one for at least a month.
