Two Leopard Geckos

Hi I have two leopard geckos in a 2' tank. I have had them for more than three months together in the same tank. The breeder i got them from hatched them for females and they are roughly 6 inches long.

They have never had any problems being together except tonight I caught one chasing the other one until the one being chased hid and the other one gave up.

Can anybody help as to why after being together they're whole lives one started chasing the other? Will it carry on? Any help much appreciated.

It's hard to tell. I guess you're thinking that one of them may be a male, and you could be right. Google some pictures of male and female and take a look. They may have had a momentary disagreement and will be fine. On the other hand, I had clutchmates that I brought up in the same small enclosure that never had any problems (both female). I sold them to someone who kept them in a 40 gallon tank and one started beating up on the other. I had to take one back and re-sell it, so you never know. Check the genders, keep an eye on the situation and be prepared to separate them if necessary.

Could be a few reasons -

1) Your breeder's temps weren't quite right, and you wound up with 2 males. They're getting old enough that they would start showing aggression & territorial behavior.

2) Either the temps weren't quite right or nature did what nature does and one of your "females" is actually a male (that would probably be the one doing the chasing) - If he's feeling randy and she's not in the mood she'll either run away or fight him off.

3) They're both females and they just don't like eachother - Depending on the size of your tank there may not be enough room for them to go to separate spots when they're not feeling social, hence the chasing ("Get out of my spot! I can still see you!").

They could also be fighting over food, water, favorite hiding spot, etc. -- lots of stuff can set them off. Separating them would probably be a good idea.

Thankyou very much for the replies both. I will keep a close eye on the situation and see how it goes. If it carries on I will have to look into selling one as I cannot have another tank. I really hope it doesnt as it would be so hard to choose which one. :(

Keep in mind they are reptiles, not mammals. They dont make friends with one another and can be territorial for no reason.

its possible they can be both males and if that is the case get a seperate cage for them because they WILL fight or KILL eachother
