I ordered some giant mealies that have been sprayed with a hormone to make them grow but not pupate after I ordered them I read that they arn't recomended for feeders for reptiles does anyone know anything about this so if I shouldn't use them I can try to cancel the order or throw them away. Thanks

giant mealworms

there are two sides to using giant mealworms some people say they have no effects other say it will do harm to your pet but i have never found any proof that they have caused any harm to their pet.

well he said this specific place is spraying their giant mealies with this hormone that may or may not be harmful to reptiles. The ones u get from petco and other places should be fine the only problem u can have with them is some may be too big for ur lizards if they are young. I would not buy these mealies Lepgeckosrock as you do not know what effect they will have on your lizards but you could check out http://www.mulberryfarms.com/index.html they have good prices and very nice feeders

Better to be safe than sorry! Just get superworms instead--they are naturally that size and they are more nutritious and easier to digest than mealworms anyway...

Thanks for all the responses I sent NY Worms a e-mail to either cancel the order or change it to supers. It just through me off because one place on there site said they are great for reptiles and in the faq section it said they didn't recomend them for reptiles. I just hope they get this mealie thing fixed fast I have 2 leos that won't eat nothing but mealies and 2 that just eat crix. And one of the leos Miss Butters even has to be hand fed the mealies spoiled rotten worse than kids. Again thanks for all your input.

I was very hesitant to abruptly swap over to supers, but out of 175+ geckos, very few have had issues with them. I think it was easier because I've used Repashy's calcium plus to dust all my live foods for a while now, so I'm sure they smell/taste roughly the same as regular mealies. Now I just don't know what to feed the little ones... Good luck!

i would definitely get your lizards to eat something other than mealies with the shortage and all or at least start breeding mealies

Just to confirm yes ALL the so called giant mealworms have been treated with a hormone not sure of witch one but this is how the stores are able to get them so big instead of getting to size XX and turning into beetles they just keep growing for the most part i have seen some giant meal worms turn into beetle but i do not know if they are able to produce. I have used them in the past with out problems.....but i dont know if long term use of them is a good thing hope this helps

Giant mealworms are geneticlly altered with a natural hormone that prohibits them from pupating as early as other mealworms do. They are completely safe to feed your geckos.
