UTH question...

I have a 12"x12"x12" Exo-Terra cage. Would it be better to get a 12"x12" UTH to cover the entire bottom of the cage or should I get a smaller one to just heat a small space?

smaller one to heat only a small space. i have an 18x18 and i use the 8x8 uth and its perfect in the back right corner. They need a hot hide to digest food and a moist hide to help with shedding.

I'd only cover 1/3 of the surface with a UTH to allow for a good temperature gradient. Certainly don't cover more than 1/2. They must have an area where they can easily escape the heat if needed.

Smaller.
It should cover 1/3-1/2 because they cannot control their own body heat.
So if they are too hot they can't cool down (can't sweat/pant) and same if they are too cold (can't shiver).
This creates a warm side and a cool side.
Warm side should be 88-92 (my opinion).
Cool side should be room temperature.

I agree with the posts above about the UTH placement. I also think that 12x12 is a bit small for an adult leopard gecko. Most people feel that the smallest reasonable size for 1 adult is a 10 gallon tank (10"x20" = 200 sq. inches). The 12x12 will be only 144 sq. in.

What are you planing to put in this cage?
If this is for an adult leo, your cage is too small.
You should have 15gal minimum (20gal is better) for one leo.

I'm going to build a bigger enclosure once it grows up. Now it's only a few weeks old.

I would say 12x12 is OK for a baby. Get the smallest UTH (mini 1-5 gallon size by zoo-med). Check out lllreptile online and see if they'll ship to Malaysia.

I think Amazon sells ZooMed UTH's and ship to Malaysia.
