UTH temps through the roof, need advice asap!

Hi all, I recently bought two leopard geckos and while in the process of separating them, bought another UTH. I set up the new home and measured the temps. 111 degrees surface temp :stunned: What do I do?

They're no longer getting along so I need to split them asap, but the new home is too hot.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :D

Just put a piece of thin cardboard or a sheet or two of paper towel directly over the uth. Wait awhile and then test the temperature.

I would recommend a thermostat or Rheostat to regulate and control the temperatures.

I just need a quick solution for now. Programming a microprocessor to automate all the tasks for lighting, temp, misting, etc... Keeps the cost down. I have 5 tanks in total to keep up.

You NEED a thermostat or at least a dimmer. Not worth the risk of fire if one were to overheat. All 56 of my enclosures are hooked up to thermostats

Yea I realize that, the microprocessor isn't going to guess the temp in its own, a need for sensors is a given. I'm just not going to waste money on reptile specific stuff, its way overpriced.

If you need a rheostat, you're right, you can get a lamp dimmer from Home Depot or equialent for under $20. If you want a thermostat, you may as well spend under $30 and get the Alife, ESU or Zilla which are worth that amount. You may luck out with ebay for a good price. I'd say the rheostat would be a good quick fix or else adding layers to the bottom of the tank temporarily.

Thanks for the links and stuff but I'm building something custom that will take care of all 5 tanks. There's a programmable microprocessor called Arduino. You can buy any sensors you want from any electronic component website and program the thing to read sensor, process, and output a certain function.

The microprocessor is ~$20, sensors are ~$3 each, I can have a fully automated setup that will monitor temps, humidity in my cresteds tanks, lighting, timing, etc for under $50... This project will save lots of space and money.

I had the same problem when i put my uth, with a thermostat probe. It was reaching temperatures of upto 120!

My solution at home depot ,they sell lamp dimmer bought one for 10 buks played around with it and now i mantain temperatures of 84 at night and 90 during the day.

look on ebay and get a hydrofarms thermostat, they work good and u can get 2 for 58 free shpping split the tank between the two and ull be good, buying thermostats for your reptile ist a waste of money its something u have to do in order to provide your reptile with the right temps, well at least i dont see it as a waste of money!!
