I use the exo-terra 3-D rock background. Its great because they can climb up it. In fact, mine climbs to the top and that's where he does his bidness.

And besides it looks great. Its a lot more realistic looking than a 2-D scene of some sort.

I bought the dessert background for my tank because that is their natural enviorment. They sell it by the foot at the petstore. Just make sure to measure before you go! It is a cheap way to spruce up and boring setup.

If you want a slightly more labor intensive background project (I'm sure I've posted about this before):

I googled for images of Pakistan, Afghanistan landscapes, printed the pictures I liked, mounted them on nice paper from Staples, laminated them and taped them to the back of the tank. A little natural habitat effect.

:D that's similar to how I did my background pics ~ only I was lucky enough to have photos and I used Posteriza to print them :)

Well...I use rainforest pictures (my personal preference...;)). I find pics that I like from books, scanned them and print them out.

I do agree that it looks like they are going after reflections sometimes. I use the fish tank backgrounds (desert scenes) on 3 sides of the tanks because I think it makes them feel safer. It also prevents sunlight from pouring in. (fyi: they are not infront of windows). My youngest likes to draw pictures for his leos background. Hopefully the leo appreciates it.

Don't know if this helps, but I painted the back (on the outside) of our 55 gallon with acrylic craft paint. Didn't turn out the way I really wanted it to, but I guess its alright.
