If you use slate tile, do you just put it in, or does it need some treatment first, and with what? Some kind of sealant? What is safe to use?

When I bought mine I washed it with hot water soap and vinegar. You dont need a sealant, just cut to fit and your good to go. It distributes heat very well but you can put a layer of sand/papertowel under it.

Russel is correct but, youd be surprised at how poorley papper towel breaks down in animals stomachs.

RusselL haha everyone puts only 1 L in my name. But of all the breeders here who have been using paper towel for decades, i've never heard of a gecko eating a paper towel. Maybe he is using small napkin sized paper towel? Cuz i just cant see a gecko eating a full sized paper towel.

I dunno about eating the paper towels. I've never had one eat any... but I do have one girl that as soon as her moist hide paper towel isn't moist enough for her she'll pull it out and throw it everywhere lol.

Surprised no one mentioned reptile rugs. (or at least I didn't see it) I Always keep two on hand - one lines the tank and the other as a back-up for the weekly cleaning. Come cleaning time, I pressure wash the dirty one outside and replace it with the one that was drying in my garage for a week. Simple. In the juvi tank, I do the same with pieces of outdoor rug that resemble astroturf. Got a huge piece at Home Depot for around 4 bucks. Looks great, too. Bob

reps tend to loose claws on the rugs as they get snagged and iv also seen them get it tangled in their teeth when attacking pray.

She obviously didn't eat the whole paper towle just a huge piece of it. At the vets iv seen a number of impactions from all sorts of things from feeder insect shells to plastic/silk decoration plants!

Haven't had that happen yet in a year, but I guess it could? What about the astroturf? I'm actually liking the look of that better and there is absolutely nothing for them to get their claws snagged on. I do also provide smooth tile areas at both ends to lay on in case they don't like the soft, bristly fibers - but it really doesn't seem to bother them at all. Bob
