Ok, I did a search and couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I wanna get some waxworms for my leo, but since I only have one, I wanted to know how long they last. I only plan on giving 1-2 a week and they only come in 25 count where I can get them. Also, what can I use to gutload? Thanks in advance!

In the refrigerater they die off quickly. And wax worms are like drugs to leos they are addictive and kinda bad....like a big mac! Anyway out of the refrigerater they only live like 2 weeks if your lucky!

Wait that confused me. Was that a typo about in and out of the fridge? Or you just syaing they don't last long either way?

And gutloading?

My local pet store sells them singly. So every now & then, like going to the penny candy store, I'll come home with a few. Sure it'll cost more in the long run, but they're fresh, white & fat. In the fridge they just turn black too fast.

All I have around me is a Petco, Petsmart opening within the next 2 months, and a small family owned pet shop I refuse to give business to. So basically Petco is my only option, and I have only seen them in the 25 count tubs.

When I get my tubs of 50 waxies, they are in the refridgerator and it says right own the tub to keep them in cool. I have had tubs that I forgot about and left them in the refridgerator for like a month and remembered they were in their, figured they were all dead but alot were still alive lol.

If you put them in the refrigerator, put them inside a styrofoem cooler of some sort. You frig is probably around 4 or 5 degrees C, the optimium temp to store waxworms at is 9C. Too cool and they will turn black on you and die. You do not need to feed waxworms, they will be fine for the duration you have them.

I use them for my breeders to keep there weight up during breeding season as well as other feeders. I have many geckos that won't even eat them. I get mine locally from a guy that raises them for bait shops and they are cheaper than crickets for me.

wow thats funny my male BB won't eat them either. He has shown no interest in any kind of worm but now I got 50 waxworms and bout 20 mealies left he won't touch. Any tricks to get him to atleast try one I think thats the problem he has never had worms and he is an adult. When I got him at petsmart he was being feed crix as far as I could tell. Maby he's a health nut LOL

Another case of people saying exactly what someone else said...

They are not like drugs... People use super worms as a regular part of their leos diet but they are almost as "fatty" as wax worms... People need to get facts straight... Sure they should not be used as a staple but should be offered as a regular part of a leos varied diet... Giving 5 to 10 a week to a leo will not do any harm... They actuallt have the fats and calcium and other stuff leos need in their diets...

This 1 or 2 wax worms a month for a "treat" is rediculous and it lacks any backing or any reasons why this should be the case...

This is correct, your typical fridge is slightly too cold for them and that is why some people find it hard to keep waxworms for very long.

I hate the little suckers and maybe get them every other month or so as a treat. Only about half my leos will eat them, so just like the healthier stuff! :main_thumbsup: So I only get a 50 count tub of them when I do decide to buy some.

I use at about a 1000 a month. As i said they are cheaper than crickets for me.

My beardies will eat these till they bust, but they will eat everything until they bust.

Yes I am!!! I'm a girl! Should be happy I like cold blooded critters!! ;)

Oh I'm gonna have to take pics of me feeding Andromeda tomorrow. There is just something about f/t rats that are just so gross. At least I don't have to feed her as often as the geckos, and supers don't gross me out at all. Ok they used to but I had to get over that cause picking them out with tweezers just took too long. LOL
