I have gotten more than a few flat eggs this season and its frustrating..

what causes this?

am im not getting to them early enough after laid?

some have bulls eyes but are still partially flat.. (more than an Dent)

Also

ive heard 2 things..

1. never flip the egg..
2. always have the bulls eye up..

what about when the egg is laid bullseye down?

Even if the egg is laid bulls-eye down, you can turn it around until 24 hours after laying time to rotate the bulls-eye to the top.

In my experience, there are two explanations for flat eggs: 1. the eggs were no good (that even happens sometimes if you see a bulls-eye, especially when you see very dark red veins in a circle, or one very dark blotch!). 2. the eggs dried out. That happened to me sometimes when I found them too late, and the heat in the cage was too much for the eggs during that time. Or, it also happens when your tupperware container in the incubator is not closed right, and too much air gets to the eggs and dries them out. (Or, your substrate was not moist enough.)

Is your female a first-time mother? If yes, that might be the reason. But mine usually have success with their second clutch already. What substrate do you use? I use perlite now, because I made bad experiences with the vermiculite (got too moist; moldy eggs). The perlite works fine for me.

Good luck with incubation!

Is this what you mean by flat eggs? This is the last clutch that Bonnie laid, I got to these eggs within 12hours of her laying them..but they looked like this!?!?! I figured it was because it was her last clutch of the season but she seems to be developing another clutch. I can't figure out what happened.

Thoughts?

flat eggs are generally bad eggs.

as far as the bullseye i always put the eggs in the vermiculite as i found them in the lay box.

Usually it is because the humidity level is to low, the egg/s are infertile, or wasn't meant to be.

This is what I do as well.

Yup I mark them before I ever move them to the bator!

it definitly wasn't humidity...Im waiting to see if she produces anymore viable eggs...I kinda feel like she's poopin out for the season, I could always re-mate her but this is her first year so I don't want to over do it! She is actually 5grams more now then she was prior to mating! She did sooo well!
