Hi guys,

I was wondering what you are all thinking about this anti parasite/anti bacteria supplement.

http://www.junglereptile.com/productsb.asp

I have been looking at it for a while now and I figured that if it was developed by Ron Tremper there has to be something to it. I know its not a be all and end all but would it really be good for helping to prevent parasites? None of my geckos have parasites but could this help them from deveolping a problem?
What are you opinions?

Thanks

I asked about this a while back when tremper sent out the original email about the product. The response that I got was that it's unnecessary. Basically if you provide this product, the parasites and whatnot may grow immune to the anti-parasite addititive.

Usually they get parasites when you do not quarantine a new reptile properly. I have also heard that they can get parasites from eating crickets that have been left in the cage for extended periods and who have fed on the geckos feces during that time (IE the gecko is eating his poo), but I'm not sure the accuracy of that.

If you avoid spreading parasites there shouldn't really be a need for this supplement.

thats basically what I thought, I mean I clean cages, dishes on a daily basis and as careful anytime a new geckos comes in that I dont handle it then go to my other enclosures. I just thought it might be good for those new geckos that do come in to make sure they have no parasites (obviously other than taking then to the vet)

I'll respond the same way I did to the first thread on this subject...

I think it's completely unnecessary, and simply a way to market a product and make money.

There is absolutely NO therapeutic reason to put anti-parasitic medications in reptile supplements. By putting these chemicals in the supplements, it's a sure way to create a "super parasite" that is immune to the medication.

If a reptile has parasites, they should be diagnosed and treated by a veterinarian. Different parasites require specific medications and dosages to treat the infection. If a reptile develops a clinical parasitic infection and has been on the low/ineffective doses in the supplements, there is a huge risk that the animal will not be able to respond to the therapeutic dose.

ditto to what Marcia said--plus, if you breed/produce animals with naturally healthy immune systems--you shouldn't need to supplement with ANYTHING :) As long as they eat a decent diet, and drink quality water...
