I've seen pictures of them and I must say I'd love to have one but they seem rare. I've only seen them in the possession of maybe one or two breeders. Is a Melanistic just a specimen with more melanin in their skin so that they appear darker?

They are not true melanistics... In a true melanistic animal, the defective gene is passed genetically, usually recessive... The selective breeding of "dark" animals does not make them melanistic, it makes them dark animals... If you look at any true melanistic reptile, it is fully black... This includes eyes and belly scales...

I just found this site melanism.com, and while it has nothing to do with this topic at all(sorry), it gave me a pretty good laugh.

This was on the first page. As a "warning" before you enter.

WARNING: This site contains the ego of one man who thinks he is so important that he needs his own website to prove it...also, he has stolen (creatively borrowed?) content from other websites, made pointless theories that you shouldn't really care about, made links to sites you have already been to, has nothing of true value to say, and to make matters worse, frequently speaks about himself in the third person!

Don’t say I didn’t warn you
