+1 for roaches. I don't know what you're talking about with crickets VS roaches or mealies, If kept clean mealworms have virtually no odor and roaches don't smell period. Crickets on the other hand, are dirty, smelly, VERY short lived and NOISY. I'll take odorless, long lived, fast breeding non-climbers who don't chirp over that any day.

I voted mealworms because if you gutload mealworms properly they probably do have a decent nutritional value and they dont smell can be kept in the fridge for weeks and dont make sound

I just started up a Blaptica Dubia colony this week and have fed off a few nymphs to ensure my gecko likes them before I start breeding them in full force. After watching the way he hunted them down and devoured them, I can say that I think I have fed my last cricket. Mealworms and roaches (that I am breeding) as my staples from here on out with the occasional purchase of phoenix, wax, and butterworms. My only concern now is that after eating the roaches, he won't want to touch the mealworms anymore:D

4. Tidy and do not have an odor unlike mealies, roaches.

I don't know what roaches you are using but I have two bins with over 10,000 Dubia each and there is no smell what so ever! What species have you used?

I would have to go with mealworms, because they are easy to keep easy to breed and easy to feed.Alot of people go back and forth with mealworms but i think they are a good staple with the occasional treat of wax worms and phoenix worms...another good idea is dubia roaches there like 10x more nutritious then crickets.I personally feed my geckos mealworms and waxworms.

I'm using crickets but they escape no matter what I do. Considering roaches, do they escape? If they do r u likely to get an infestation?

Roaches will not escape, because they can't climb smooth surfaces. That also allows you to put them in a smooth dish for feeding if you want to. I have a colony of B. Lateralis and got leopard geckos that used to eat mealworms, and they switched over fine. And, like other people said, they don't make noise or smell bad.
EDIT: as for infestation, they are tropical roaches so they are not likely to infest your house unless you live in florida.

To me any feeder can be a good feeder as long as they are fed a good diet & supplemented correctly (although by "good feeder" I don't mean any of the fatty ones, like waxworms & such continuously.)

I feed mealworms as a staple, but get crickets about 2 or 3 times a month.

Think i could feed these to my gecko's ? I found a bunch of these in a pile of top soil . There are not pesticides or fertilizers anywhere even close to them. i live in the country and would love to have a local source of food, so i don't have to drive an hour for crickets or meal worms

There's no way to be sure it doesn't have a parasite, a virus, or a fungus on it. Outside insects are MAJOR disease vector for inside pets. It's not worth the risk. Mealworms are extremely easy to raise. You could go into town, buy yourself a couple thousand, and never have to shop for them again. I'm fairly certain there is an article on raising them in this forum, but it's probably buried without search. This is the one I see people link here a lot:

How funny, this post just showed up at the top of the forum for me right after I posted about wondering what the nutritional value differences between dubias and crickets are. As I say in my post, I am thinking that I'll be giving up on the crickets and switching to dubias entirely since all my geckos like them. So this post here is good info for me! I'm still wondering which is more nutritious though. Anyone know?

Crickets are just TOO nasty for me now.

I feed 2 supers and 4 mealies every other day to my 3 as a staple. A pinky or two when the females are gravid. I am going to get some dubias and hissers. To start my colony. I hear good things about roaches so.

Right so, I voted mealworms because that would be the best choice from the ones on the list IMO.

HOWEVER. I think silkworms are the best feeder (in my case anyway since roaches aren't allowed to be kept in Canada :main_no: so sad...) but anyways, these statistics speak for themselves:

http://www.silkwormshop.com/benefits.html

They're low in fat, high in protein and have only a point one difference in CA:p (0.5:0.6). Besides that they don't have an exoskeleton or chitin that would interfere with the nutritional value and they're just easier to eat. I'd recommend buying them online though since they can be pricy at local petshops ($1.00 or $1.50 here in BC at my local petstore :main_rolleyes: ridiculous.)

If you're interested I believe this is the cheapest I've found them online (compared to a standard 17.50 which seems to be the typical price for a count of 50.)

Good luck choosing :main_thumbsup:
