Which powdered crested gecko food to feed leo when not eating?

Four weeks ago, one of my leos stopped eating. With as picky as they can be, I tried different foods and did lots of research on here and other places. Once I noticed her losing weight, I made an appointment with a vet. He saw her this morning, said it may be a parasite, gave her an injection of Baytril and more to take home. He also recommended feeding her either some baby food or a powdered crested gecko food that is mixed with water and said the reptile shop down the street carries it. I didn't realize it then, but that reptile shop didn't open for two more hours and I had somewhere I had to be soon after and couldn't wait and it is a bit out of my way now to have to go back if I can find it closer. But I'm not sure specifically what he was talking about and I was just going to ask at that reptile shop what to get, but now I'm out of the area. So, was he just talking about one of the meal replacement powders, or is there something more specific for sick crested geckos? If thats what he was talking about, is Repashy about the best brand to get, or is there something better?

Thanks!!!!

Don't remember - I was half asleep. But he said its common for them to get. He gave her Baytril and some other things he said should help stimulate her appetite. I need to figure out what this crested gecko powder that he suggested getting is. I'm pretty sure he is just talking about meal replacement powder, but I don't know if there is anything else that is specific to use in this situation. He also suggested fruit or squash baby food, but I'd rather get something thats a bit more specific to reptiles. If I can't get it figured out here soon, I'll just get some MRP and hope thats what he was talking about.

maybe someone else can help you with that part, but you have to wake up and pay attention to what is going on because baytril does not work for parasites. You will be giving him something he does not need and can do harm. A parasite has to be treated with a dewormer not baytril.

Edit: The vet must be talking about this.

Crested geckos are fruit eaters. Leopard geckos are insectivores. The MRP powder isn't even CLOSE to a balanced diet for them. Baytril injections certainly won't stimulate an appetite.

Tell this vet thank you very much, then run in the other direction.

After you're done running, then maybe review your husbandry a bit further. A lot of the time all it takes is a little tweak here and there to make a difference.

I agree 100% with Maia. Baytril is a common catch-all for vets who say "I don't know crap about reptiles but I don't want to admit it so my 3000 year old text book says give reptiles Baytril so that's what I'll do." Baytril will do absolutely jack squat for parasites, in fact it till most likely make your animal sicker than it already is. Find a QUALIFIED reptile vet.

And giving baby food to any gecko or CGD to a leopard gecko is just plain retarded.

The animal, if it does in fact have parasites, needs a fecal done by a qualified vet and then said vet should prescribe correct deworming medication to be given orally.

You had the wherewithal to go to a vet, good.
You've unfortunately discovered that this particular vet knows JACK about different species of geckos. I would try this recipe out until you can find a good vet:

http://geckoforums.net/showthread.php?t=54742

You can find a cheap for-gecko-bugs-only blender at a thrift store, if using the "human" one squicks you out. (Dude, bleach cleans everything, however. Just sayin')

Where are you in CA? There are several small enclaves of folks here on the forums in CA, I bet one could recommend a vet local to you? If not, look for one here:

edit: you're in the Bay Area! There's tons of folks in the Bay Area!
Somebody say where the vets are...

Consider filling out the questionnaire form in the sticky (at the top of the Health & Medications section) as a new thread. Somebody here might help you figure out if there is anything you can adjust in husbandry to help get your little one feeding again. The questionnaire helps prevent a lot of back-and-forth questioning/time wasted. Which is good, if you're worried about your geck-kid.

Good luck!

Wow, great way for a thread to get blown out of proportion. I thought it may have been easier and faster to ask more experienced folks here what to use instead of emailing the doctor, but I was wrong, it ended up being quicker to email him. It was the MRP he was referring to. I've got a great vet, who knows plenty about reptiles. He definitely wouldn't prescribe something if he didn't think it was what is needed, so no need to to run anywhere, except back for our followup appointment in three weeks.

So let me get this straight.....

You're doctor gives your animal an ANTIBIOTIC to treat PARASITES and you consider them a "great doctor?"

Yeah, that makes all the sense in the world.

Good luck with keeping your animal alive, you're going to need it.

MRP is formulated for geckos who require a primarily FRUIT based diet. Leopard geckos are insectivores. Any vet who tells you to give them MRP is clueless.
