I prefer to have a small dish with mealworms and vit dust in with the geckos, so its not like I'm feeding them everyday. They eat when they are hungry and it makes things a lot easier. Crickets however are a different story, due to them ingesting feces and then passing on possible parasites to your geckos. Mealworms > Crickets hands down
It isnt a convenience to not feed everyday...My adults just simply wont eat everyday. Reptiles are not like a puppy or kitten. They dont need to eat everyday to survive or do well. My adults that eat crickets get 7-10 large crickets Mon. Wed. Fri...and that is enough to keep them at a healthy weight before breeding and for them to gain weight back from breeding. My adults that eat roaches get 1 male roach Mon. Wed. Friday..and they are very healthy and girthy animals
Babies however will eat everyday because they are growing very quickly and have very fast metabolisms.
hmmm. ok.
Im not sure what to do. It would be convinient every other day for sure but I wonder how they eat in the wild. Sometimes I look at him and Im like, daymn, Im starved so he must be. haha
Remember that reptiles don't need to use the calories that mammals use to maintain body heat. As you get to know your gecko you'll get a sense of how often they want to eat. My breeders are very hungry during much of the season and nearly everyone eats at every feeding (every other day). One gets into the "feed me" pose every day and since she's a female that's laid eggs and lost weight, I do feed her every day. In the winter and early spring I feed every third day and some aren't even hungry then.
Yeah my oldie eats every couple of days of what she's in the mood for (she's crazy picky) but she has access to mealies all day since we're still working on growing tails back which are their fat stores.
And my juvie eats everyday. Shoot I go through 4 dozen crickets a week on him along with a helping of mealworms for him every other day. He's still young and has some growing to do.
I keep small bowls with Dubia I with all of my geckos. The bowl will always have dusted roaches at all times so they can just eat when they feel hungry. A put a few more in when I see them running out. This keeps them from pestering the geckos and stops them from ingesting any feces.
