I'm looking to get a new snake since i had to get rid of all my old ones from moving, but anyways i want one thats not to hard to care for, doesn't bite to often, and doesn't mind being handled. I have a few in mind like a cal king, corn, hognose, milksnake, or a childrens python.

Keep in mind that all snakes can and will bite. I have large red tail boas and have been bitten many times. To tell you the truth, they have always been my fault.

Get the snake YOU like and learn how to handle it.

A hognose is one on my list and Im not even really a snake person, I just think they look cool as heck! From what I read they do have fangs at the back of the mouth but the venom they produce is not supposed to be dangerous for people its more like a toxic thing to frogs and toads and small prey.

I still like them!

It almost seems like he made that happen to show what the result is. If that is the (sad) truth, that bite may have been much worse than it would normally be. I just mean cause he might have been pissing it off purposely.

EDIT: I was lazy and didnt read what it said. Disreguard my false thinking.

I'd seen those pictures before. It does look pretty bad, and that could very well have been for demonstrational purposes. Still, the potential is obviously there. :main_yes:

I'm going to go against the grain here. My choice would be corn/king/milk. Any one of these three would be a great choice. They're all VERY easy to care for. But I would suggest you get one with a pattern that you like. I think the only risk would be that they're so easy to take care of, you may find yourself becoming bored due to lack of challenge.

Summing it all up, I agree with the above statement. "Get the snake you REALLY want!" Good Luck with your choice, and please post pictures. :D

I have not seen those pictures in a long time. The thing to keep in mind with hognose.. or any other rear fanged "venomous" snake.. is that you do not know how you will react. It is exactly like bees. You could die, you could have your whole arm swell up.. or you can just have a little dot where the stinger went it. It just depends on how your body takes it. I have had them chew on me for ~ 2 minutes.. just like that fellow, to see what happens. Nothing happened to me.

I have had a friend bitten by a Boiga cynodon. One slight bite, he was sick for months. Vomiting, Fever and severe body aches. So.. Yeah.

My vote would go for the hognose. They are very cool little snakes that are very active. Not many people keep them. And they have a little upturned nose. Could you have a cuter snake?

IMO you cant go wrong with a corn, so many different morphs, very simple to care for and just awesome snakes. You could also consider a ball python.

I have owned 3 Diff Snakes. ! a ball Python, and 2 columbian Red tail Boas one of whick was 7 feet long when I aquired her from an Abusive home.
None of them had ever bitten me even after being fed in the same enclosure they were kept in.
I found it shocking that my 7ft boa was still so sweet after all shed gone through.

Be careful, choosing a snake, some are illegal to have as pets as they are also native. Here in GA, many large and small pet stores are getting into trouble selling cornsnakes and whatnot, bc they can be found in the wild. Also, here, you have to have a permit to have hognose snakes... that's just what I've been told though...

Whitney you are correct.....

You have to have a permit for scientific purposes to keep any of our native species in Georgia. BUT it doesnt stop us from having other hognoses like the western hognose and such. Just like with kings we cant have:Eastern/Chain kings, Scarlet kings, or black kings (nitida) But most of the others kings we can have. We can not keep any snakes that are indigenious(sp) to our state except Venomous we can keep any of our native venomous. But your advice is dead on, always check the laws in the state where you live BEFORE purchasing a snake.

Ratsnakes in general make the best pets period. Pretty hard species. Id recommend them over most all other snakes. Hognoses are fascinating. Them being rear-fanged, its almost impossible to get bit by there fangs.. but it can happen. Ive kept several local eastern hogs. They are a bit hard to get to make a switch to rodents. There rear fangs are an adaptation to pop toads and to stun them as they hold them. I once had a western hog that would eat mice readily, but sometimes its hard to get em over on rodents.
