Do people have something against a DIY wood rack? Looks like most people use AP racks. I can make 2-3 racks for the price of 1 AP.

I have nothing against wood racks. In my situation it would not be feasible. I live in an apartment complex, and have no power tools. I would have to buy the tools, and find a place to build one. Either that or hire somebody to do it. If I have to go to all that expense I figure I might as well go with an AP rack. I know I can put that together myself with a standard phillips screwdriver. I say if you have the tools, space and know-how then go for it.

I have built 2 wood racks for myself. I have not been able to find that plastic around here, and I think that wood is just easy to work with and cheap.

i just finished moding a shelf into a rack. i only used the top half for the rack and used the bottom to hold stuff. it can hold 16 shoe boxs or 12 12qt tubs. all i have to do is get the heat tape!

i love the plastic racks and one day when i have the money i will get me one ( or five! lol) but wood racks are just cheaper, easyier to build at home with a skill saw and a impact driver!

I have build melamine wood racks in the past and IMO they are to heavy and eventually ware down. Wood is not the best for humid environments either so plastics are superior in this case. I prefer to use PVC board I can get it at a local plastic supply company and build it myself and still save some money.

But I can totally understand those that do not have access to a shop full of tools.

All plastic racks here.

I have a HUGE rack :D Ok, kidding aside, I made a large wooden rack awhile back and couldn't be happier with it. Not only does it work beautifully, it's very visually appealing as well.

Pictures please? JK

Yeah, I love that rack! haha. I built one few months back out of 1/2 inch plywood, holds 18, 12 quart tubs (could have had 24 but took the bottom two out for incubator/STUFF). I thought less people used wood. Guess I was wrong =P.

Very nice rack heather.

How does it do with the humidity? has it warped or expanded.

Building a rack yourself is for one satisfying and plus it can be a money saver. I built one myself or atleast i had it cut and dadoed for me and put it together and painted it myself. Spent $130 on wood and to get it cut. As far as humidity with it, i don't know any people that spray water like crazy. They make sure its in its hides and water dish and nothing else. Most of use live in high humidity regions and therefore if high humdity was such a bad thing then no wood would last anywhere for long. If you take care of it then it will last along time.
