So I hate to say it but in my span of keeping leos ive lost 2. Yuki who we later found and died...then there was Spit Fire. The ONLY pet store gecko...Shortly after we finished our main big cage about a year ago, Spit had figured out how to push the doors opened...I had spend days trying to keep him in till i could get to town for better locks. Sure enough he pushed the door open and this time we didnt find him...Then...yesterday...He turned up....I'll let the pic show you... Found under our house. Minnesota's winters are like no others...Wow.

That's crazy! You said he survived a winter? How long was he missing for? That's great you found him alive and kicking.

congrats on finding him! that's an awesome story that shows just how resilient these guys are. longest i've gone without finding one has been a little over a month. actually found her a couple of weeks ago as she tried to attack my dog when it walked by the kitchen pantry. saw her little head pop out with mouth open, lol. needless to say, she was a little skinnier but has been eating like a champ.

He was missing a little over a year! MN's winters are 6 months long. He went missing june 29th. I have no idea how he survived as there is no heating down there NONE. Not even floor-its dirt. He has all his toes, full tail everything. Still looks better then when i got him from the pet store. im happy to have him back thats for sure! We LITERALLY turned out house upside down looking for him. We'd joke about finding a gecko the size of a crocodile one day lol...Just happy to have him back!

Since he went so long without handling and proper care. What do you all figure his general health will be? Grow more? i tried feeding him a roach but he FREAKED out like he was scared of the roach..poor guy. Its gonna be a longgg hall getting him tame again. It had taken me 4 months before to get him to where i could take him out...

Amazing! I'm sure there were lots of bugs under the house to keep him fed, and if the winters are that long and cold, he probably went into brumation... which lowers their metabolism. I'm so glad you found him!

Holy crap that is incredible! I can't believe how good he looks! Makes me feel kind of silly for freaking out when mine won't eat for a day or 2. Amazing!

Wow is right! Congrats! Amazing that he looks really good too. This is a prime example of why pest control is a bad idea for homes that have reptiles :) I wonder what kind of secret life he has made for himself in the past year...........

My thoughts exactly. I expected to find a super thin, tailless, toes missing gecko. Not a gecko who looks better then most pet stores(better then when i bought him). Lol I imagine he chowed down on some interesting bugs...Think any of them were carrying parasites? He doesnt look it. I dont wanna stress him more with a trip to the vet for a bit just till he can calm down enough for me to talk to him>.> he freaks out. I'm gonna buy him his own tank and pimp it out least i can do since i allowed him to get loose and roam for so long.....

thanks all im happy to have him back!:D

That's an incredible story!!! Are you sure he was "outside" all winter? I can't imagine how he survived that. I was in St. Paul for one Christmas and almost froze :D Maybe he hid somewhere in the house and just recently escaped outside, before you found him??? He looks far too good to have led a life in cold and hunger. You're lucky! He must have found a good source of food. I would keep him separate from your other geckos, just in case he has acquired parasites in the meantime. Not very likely, since he has quite a fat tail. What he probably missed in freedom were the women :main_evilgrin:

Obviously i cant be 100% on where he has and hasnt been. I just know we turned this house upside down, laid traps(floor on the floor, hides with heat ext) for him to go in or threw to get a lead but we didnt. After 2 months we gave up. St. Paul is actually a bit warmer then where i am(Bout 4 1/2 hours north!) lol you'd freeze big time. Thing is we didnt keep the house that warm just my room where the geckos are. The rest was easily 60F ish or lower-we used a fire to heat the house) He's seperate and in a tub for now just till i can make sure his health isnt risky to the others. I imagine he did fine a good one but i cant help but wonder why he didnt stay in my room as this is where all the bugs are and wouldnt he have been able to taste/smell them in there and wanna stick around? I know at first id let a few bugs loose in hopes hed find them lol but after a bit i gave up. I imagine he had a nice diet of spiders and beetles of some kind. Boy the story he'd tell....
