Hello everyone,

I know a few of you have and breed the Uroplatus genus. The reason I am posting in this forum is because I need advice ASAP and the leaf tail subforum is much less visited. I will post there as well, or if a moderator desires s/he can move it.

I recently purchased two geckos, U.s.Sameiti's. One, the Female, came in not great condition, but showed improvement physically over 2 days. The male came in in Horrible condition, emaciated, dehydrated and on his death bed. 2 nights later he died.

The female has been doing fine, however, she has not eliminated yet. She gets misted 3+ times daily because she was in such a large enclosure with only paper towel. However, the paper towel was always kept moist.

THE PROBLEM. I redid her cage today, I put in 3 live plants, coco fiber substrate, then coconut chunks on top of it (little squares). She stayed on the screen top during this whole time and I did not want to stress her so i left her there until i needed to move her. It was completely finished when i picked her up and realized HER EYES ARE ABOUT TO EXPLODE> NO JOKE. They are both CLOUDY, as if she is BLIND. Her RIGHT eye is HUGE and sticking out a lot, and the yellow rim around her eye is HUGE. her LEFT eye is not as bad, CLOUDY like the right, but the yellow rim is not large, its actually thin, and it is not sticking out of the socket.

I THINK SHE IS BLIND, she just crawls around aimlessly toward the top of the cage as if she is seeking safety (she never stays on the ground, i cant get her to get off my hand and climb from the groudn to the top), with her head kinda sticking up like she doesnt want to bump it. While on my hand she stuck her arm up in the air as if she was feeling for something to grab and there was nothing there.

I CAN NOT GET HER TO DRINK, she wont lick any water off the glass, off her eyes, anything.

The best pics could get are here, if anyone has ANY idea what is going on please throw it out here! ANY ADVICE, knowledge on what might be going on, ANYTHING!!!

(im going to post this, then put up pics, i want people to read this ASAP and the pics are going to take time to upload!)

THANKS!!!
Jill

The RIGHT eye, the rim (yellow) is huge. You cant tell really from the angle but its really sticking out from the rest of his head. Its clearly NOT clear and very cloudy:

Right vs. Left side

LEFT SIDE, you can see her tail is starting to show signs of dehydration because i cant get her to drink

I agree with you on the vet theres just a few things:

1. She doesnt seem like she'll make it through the night, she's getting progressivly worse
2. If she makes it through the night she's going to be so weak a trip to the vet will def. hyper stress her and kill her
3. Theres no feces becuase she has not eliminated so they ccant do a fecal exam i think
4. If she makes it and goes on meds between being forced meds, not eating/drinking she'll most likely hyper stress and die. which would A. really suck because she is awesome and b. really suck cuz thats a LOT of money

Both of the sameiti i got from this breeder have had issues. I'm so disappointed. Hopefully my 2 sikorae keep going strong like they have these last few months, and dont develope and problems like the sameiti

That's awful, I know you must be worried about the effects of taking her to the vet, but do you really think she will get better without intervention with a condition that severe?

Definitely take her to a herp vet, if she does pass away at least you'll know you did everything you could! If she the condition can't be repaired and she is in pain and suffering it might be better to have her euthanized rather than let her suffer.

And maybe you should schedule an appt. to take your other herps from that breeder for a checkup as well. I'm sorry and I hope she makes it!

She died. I have been trying to contact the importer. He has been ignoring my emails because he does not want to take responsibilitiy.
Our last two emails consisted of me writing a lot, and saying i have not heard from him and blah blah and his response was 'I am at work and answer emails when i can.'
Apparently he has been working 3 days straight without a spec of time because he has not answered me since that email.

I do not want to make too big a deal about this on the forum, hopefully he will contact me and things will be sorted out.

Thanks everyone.

I'm trying to handle the situation as best as possible. I dont want to blow it out of proportion or anything. I also cant help but think, was it my fault?
But when i go over the facts...it really doesnt make sense to me.

i paid for my geckos. On more then one, or even two occasions, he said he would do something but did not or it took many days. He said he would send pictures the next day, he did not. He said he would only charge me a cerrtain amount for holding them then changed that, he said he would send a tracking number but did not. He said that they were eating great and healthy, they DEFINATELY were not.
He also told me if i was dissatisfied in any way he would pay to have them shipped back and he would exchange them or give me my money back because he could resell them. He then added in who could offer a better deal then that. It sounded really good, and I gave him a benefit of the doubt on the delays of things, as i'm sure he works. But one time he said he'd email me something, he didnt, we called, he said he would do it that night, he didnt, we called the next day, and then he did it that night.

I'm really upset about not just the money, but the dishonesty. Had the importer been honest and said they are regressing in health and taken them to the vet instead of being concered about making money, it could have most likely not ended their lives.

I'm sorry to see this happened, but it is the risk you take when buying WC geckos... I would guess some sort of parasite caused the eye problem...

I am so sorry for your loss. I hope that you are able to resolve the issue of the money. Hopefully the breeder values his reputation and makes this right. Best wishes.
