OK, I had to share this, since it's a new procedure and form of birth control. It's called Implanon and it's an implant that goes into the underside of your arm and works for 3 years....think about that ladies, no worries for 3 years. Only a few practitioners in the US are doing it so far. Luckily my doc was one of them! So i went in today and had this lovely toothpick sized plastic rod inserted into my left arm. They numbed it with a topical shot of lidocaine (gotta love that stuff!) and stuck this needle in my arm that reminded me of the needle that was used to pierce my tongue with a 14 gauge...so it's a very big needle....just thought I'd share the picture of my poor arm...oh, the yellow stuff is the sterilizing stuff they washed the site with. I left the bandaid in the pic for size comparison, and that is a flap of skin over the hole, not the implant. It feels really creepy too, I can feel it sitting just under the skin...oh and the doc just made me feel oh so special about it...I'm the first one at the Synergy Medical Alliance (doc office) to have this put in...and the first one in the STATE OF MICHIGAN who goes to residents (Student Doctors) to have it done. oh and my arm hurts......lol wonder why

no, not brave....I just hate remembering to take a pill every night, can't stand the thought of a shot every 3 months (with no lidocaine) an IUD scares me after I saw a show with a woman who forgot about it and had an infection because of it, the patch has waaay too many risks....and I just don't like any other forms

and it was the supervising physician who did the procedure...Synergy is an education doc office, I even had residents deliver both of my daughters

You're lucky Jill, I can't take any form of hormone birth control because of risk of cancer. I had a tumor removed a few years back and was told never ever to take hormones again. Oh God I'm not looking forward to "The Change"!

I have heard about these before, I might look into it.

I have a few friends who have IUD's and they have said nothing but good things to say so far, and I seriously doubt I would forget about it lol.

I opted for the IUD. So far it's been 3 years and going good. The only thing is that my cycle is nonexistent. That is just wierd. My doctor has no concerns about it, so neither do I. If it weren't for the little IUD I'd be so prego so many times over. I just am way too busy to remember pills and patches. I hate shots. Condoms, yeah we remember them. We remember we left them in the drawer after the fact that is. LOL.

I was one of the first women to get Norplant all those years ago. Let's just say it was a dismal experience. Easy enough to implant the rods, too bad they didn't mention that months later it was a major deal to get them back out once some had moved around and others had been encapsulated (oh and the removal wasn't covered under my health insurance...nice of them to "forget" to tell me this!) Suffice to say it was an excellent birth control method however. I didn't get pregnant. Of course the fact that my emotions went nuts from the hormones, I became anemic from an almost 3 month unending period and I grew odd patches of hair might have had something to do with the fact that my husband was afraid to even speak to me let alone impregnate me! LOL

Oh and I have four kids...every single one of them an "approved birth control method" baby. Apparently I have eggs with no morals! :D
