Took the kids to the zoo this week for a day away while on Sping break. While in an area labeled "critter corner" Noah called us all over to see the leopard gecko. Sure enough it was like so many set ups, the poor thing was on SAND. Hoooray for the zoo!

From what I've read and seen in many set ups and pet/reptile shops they don't find sand a problem.

Did you think about e-mailing the zoo and letting them in on the hazard of sand for leos?

Because sand isn't the problem so many make it out to be.

If proper husbandry is used and all the animals needs are met you will never have a problem with using sand as a substrate.

Uh Oh! Didn't want to restart the sand debate!! :main_rolleyes:
Just thought it was just another example of the "experts" doing what we have all seen many times over.

The Sand debate has been going on forever! and it will NEVER end!

In life there are two sides to every story some people rather not take the risk associated with sand while others believe that sand is not a major issue if all needs are met. There is a popular "belief" that sand is a BIG NO NO NO (I agree) but that doesn't mean that people are being "cruel" by putting their animals on sand. It is their animal and I hope they made an educated decision by weighing out the Pro and Cons before using sand but as adults we can not force our "opinions" on them and thats the way of the world.

I'll stop the sand debate. It's pretty easy. If sand was such a killer as everyone says it is. Then there would be no life in an loose terrain environment smaller then a camel.

There we go as long as the Leo was taken care of at the zoo, which i bet it was, then all is good and we can love each other once again.

Sand is bad, mmkay? You shouldn't use sand, mmkay? It'll make your leo sick, and she could die, mmkay? Because sand is bad, mmkay? /Mr. Mackey
