i discovered something beautiful this am.
gecko hatchlings are easily sexed as hatchlings by using a powerful flashlight to visualize the hemipenal arteries in male geckos or the lack of them in females.

i'll see if i can get a photo showing the obvious differences

it's funny because i've noticed that they are translucent... and i had my minimag... and i thought. let's see what i can see about preanal pores with my TSF and TSM hatchlings... i was shining it at them and at an angle.. then it just kinda seemed obvious. i looked closely at a male and saw the veins/arteries... i was excited when i checked a female and there were none!!!!

w00t.

I would say before we make any conclusive results we will have to:

1. Grow these two out until they are old enough to be sexed.
2. Get a larger group to study.

But my earlier statement still stands, as I think you are onto something here.

If possible, we can do that. A lot of people hatch here, and most of us can afford flashlights. People won't mind taking a few of their hatchlings and doing that same thing, then posting the pic. Then when they become visible, there can be a part two topic of this....results!!! Then if that works for most or all cases, it will be a new earlier method of sexing hatchings, besides magnifying glasses.

that's just silly.
you can see the internal anatomy clearly. :main_laugh:
females have no large blood supply to the base of the tail.
males have a large, obvious blood supply to the hemipenes.

i only had to look at two animals to realize how simple and accurate the method is. the photo doesn't show the clarity of the difference you can see with your eyes; in my case aided with an OptiVisor magnifier. :main_robin:

you can also see the ovaries and testes though those are similar. the hemipenes are something that only the male has.

this method, what i like to call the Wegner Method, is 100% accurate.
guaranteed.

it needs to be strong enough to light up a leopard gecko's tail. i used a 3W mini maglite. the LED flashlight has less scattering of the light and allow for a clear image of the internal organs than an incandescant light might. i haven't tried anything other than the LED flashlight.

Well actually it is called the scientific method. Not really all that silly.

But as I said before I believe you to be right, and think that sexing will be made easier

I am going to try that as well, I have been having problems sexing our babies.. may need a new flashlight though..

Awesome discovery nonetheless!

Yeah. I am gonna do that to my hatchlings, after one does it's first shed. Hope that they aren't hot females. There is nothing worse than a female that hatched at day 35...(crosses my fingers)

Does she breed? That would be a big relief if she does.
