There was a lot of profanity flying around my reptile room when I was going through my hatchling rack LOL. Male, male, male, male, male, male, male, *%&*% male, male, male, *%*#*%*male, female ABOUT *^&$ TIME! male, male, male... :main_laugh:

LOL! I wasn't going to say all that, but that's about how I felt!

this method is quite accurate and depends on careful observations and understanding of anatomy. i was wrong about not being able to visualize them in adult animals. check this photo out that i just took. i'll take a pic of a female too, shortly. if i'm wrong, i have no problem admitting it. sorry i haven't kept up with this thread. i'm more than happy to assist.

here's a pic of a known female. she's laid eggs, so no question about that. there are veins in the same position as the hemipenes would be in, so, maybe in juvies the differences are very small. i used this method to sex about 30 leos last season and only was wrong about 2. either i'm very lucky or the method must work.
i have 65 hatchlings that i incubated at 85F to sex, i guess i should get started and see how accurate it is. maybe it's the actual hemipene we need to visualize and not that vein.

I don't get why it's so important to know if it's male of female right out of the egg. Being I wouldn't sell any gecko before 20+ grams and properly sexed with the "old school" method. I know, I'm old and it's waaaayyy more boring to wait and visually see it. I guess I'm missing something here. I mean it's cool and all that this works for some people, but it seems by reading this thread that it doesn't work for others. I'd rather be 100% sure rather than guessing if I'm seeing the "right" thing. Just my worthless 2 pennies.

A tip for doing this method which i always use.

even if male the if there isnt blood flowing to the hemipenis they will not be red..
if you "stimulate" that area it gets the blood flowing better and the become more pronounced.

Interesting. I didn't think you could try this for hatchlings right out of the egg, but to a large extent, I agree with Chris from WildWest that we are not really concerned until the geckos get close to seeing what sex they are around shipping weight, when you can usually see whether they are looking male or not. We temp sex our geckos and plan our holdbacks according to what sex we are desiring to keep for the coming season, but this is useful in that it is just another tool to get an idea for what is possibly on the horizon for us. Thanks for sharing.
