This works! I just tried this on 15 hatchlings most of the ones TSD for male @ 89F showed red veins on either side of the main vein leading into the tail. I used a maglite LED penlite to do this. I placed the the LED directly on the Leo and rotated the light around the base of the tail till I got the right angle. I also did this to a few adults to get an idea of what I was looking for. What a great discovery! This is sooooo cool. I wonder if you can do this to Crested Geckos?!? I'm gonna try it :) ElapidSVT you are the MAN!!!

Ok, so I did this. Not to a hatchling, but to my baby gecko, Blazer.

Anyhow, when I did this, I saw two small balls (for lack of a better term) that had seperate veins going to them, that eventaully connected, making a v like thing. Is this what you would find in a male?!

I guess I'm just having a hard time understanding what I should be seeing.

they aren't balls.... there hemipeans < doesn't know how to spell it>

Had to ask in the chatroom about this post lol. Sorry Rob I forgot it was you how posted this thread. Never the less I'm glad you posted it. :main_thumbsup:

I "candled" a new hatchling tonight and seen lots of vascular formations around the center of the vent. If I'm seeing your pics correctly this will be sign of male, and the female would have an absence of them correct?

It worked! I was pretty sure I ended up with another female and as he is much to young to visibly sex I'm not 100% sure. But I put an led flashlight against the back of his tail and let the light shine through, and I saw the two vertical veins on either side of the vent. That's really neat that you figured that out!

hey rich, the formations around the center of the vent are the same in both sexes, the males have hemipenes that arise at the sides of the vent. when they are angry or upset like they often get while being held upside down the hemipenes can be difficult to visualize. here's a couple pics i took today to illustrate.

relatively relaxed male as seen in the first page of this post:

agitated male:

angry male (biting me):

here's another male:

hope these images help clear up any confusion; it's awesome to know for sure what you're dealing with right out of the egg, innit!

So this is a new way to help sell Leo juvies. you sex them and sell them when you want.

Out of curiosity, did those geckos end up being male and female? It looks pretty simple and accurate, just wondering how many times did you end up testing this out and each experiment turned out correct.

DOES NOT WORK!!!

I have tried this with hatchlings at first and was starting to get bummed because all of mine that were incubated as females were showing to be males according to this method!! I decided to see what my adult females looked like since I knew 100% that they were female.

Turns out that this method is VERY bogus since ALL of my adult females show the same thing that was labeled in the past posts to verify male sex. This method DOES NOT work!!!

I have had a similar experience, lots of false positives for male.

I'm glad I'm not the only one! I was VERY upset last night when I read this thread and decided to experiment. Turned out that all, every one, of my holdbacks were male! I told my husband that we better have a male sale...lol. Decided, I wanted to be sure before I parted with my favorites and checked the adult females....

I'm SOOO glad that this turned out to be wrong!
