There's a lot of hype surrounding the possible end of the world in 2012. There's a book written about it, and it discusses possible causes of the apocalypse. One of the major ones was supervolcanoes. It showed that we are a few thousand years overdue for a massive supervolcano eruption. Well, checking the news today, apparently that seems likely to happen. More than 400 earthquakes have been recorded in yellowstone, which happens to be one of the largest of the seven supervolcanoes in the world, in the past several days. That's almost half of a year's worth of earthquakes for that area!
The parents of this 2012 paranoia were the mayan and Aztec civilizations, particularly the Mayans. They were even more accurate in predicting major astrological events than we are today. Even their' solar calendar was more accurate than ours. It's no wonder why people started believing their apocalypse prediction. There is some good news, however. After much calculation, I found that the approximate dates that the Mayans believed the first, second, third, and fourth (this current world) worlds began and ended DID NOT match with any significant events in the history of the earth.

thats true the mayans were great mathmaticians and they ended their calander on dec. 22 2010. my science teacher whos also a doctor told me that there is a possibility the world will rotate off the axis somehow.
whatever happens happens, i hope no one starts goin nuts before and nothing will end up happening.

It's all a load. :main_laugh:

I don't believe a word of it. A catastrophic event could and probably will happen.. But there's no way to predict it or if it will destoroy the entire planet as we know it.

It's complete and udder BS. I don't believe a word of it.

The Yellowstone supervolcano stuff as of late is all media hype. The Yellowstone supervolcanoes have shown "warning signs" of "imminent eruption" for the last 30 years of being a threat. The USGS set it high on the list of a threat. But that's mainly because we don't know how a supervolcano's schedule works, as we haven't been around long enough. The last time one erupted (which, ironically, is smaller than yellowstone's caldera), it killed off 90% of the world's human population.

I think that a more likely explanation for the 2012 "end of the world" is more like that of the futurist's "enlightening". Where the world, as a whole, will benefit from some grand discovery (probably technological), and we'll see a vast change from our previous centuries of living.

...or the US could elect a crazy MFer to presidency that year, and he could make a bad decision leading to WWIII, ending the world...

See how absurd it is? Anything could happen. But I think it's BS.

Just my $.02

Your science teacher is a nut.

The physicists of our current day, the ones that are coming close to finding the higgs boson (the particle theorized to have given all matter mass after the big bang) and the ones that have theorized the big bang, quantum physics, the string theory (google that one, people), etc. are much more advanced, and could much more accurately predict a changing of the earth's axis.

Although...I wonder if the collapse of yellowstone's caldera would have enough force behind it to move the earth (so to speak) :p Hahaha.

eh. I've been reading about this for years and honestly don't care. If it's true or not most things need to come to an end sooner or later, right?

I probably won't have my superlaser on my moonbase ready by 2012 now so the dates going to get pushed back a bit. Sorry for the inconvienence.

Guess I'd better get around to booking that white water rafting trip I've always wanted to do...I've only got 3 years to get going!

Actually, his science teacher isn't all that incorrect. One of the theories of the cause of the apocalypse is a switch in the magnetic poles. That occurs every 75,000-100,000 years, meaning that we are about 10,000 years late. When that happens, the poles weaken and several "false poles" appear, which not only wreaks havoc on the thousands of natural processes that depend on the poles for guidance, it also weakens the magentic field that siphons about 90% of the UV and cosmic rays from outer space into the north and south poles, causing the Aurora Borealis. This means that we will be exposed to harmful cosmic rays and ten times as much UV rays as normal, which will have all sorts of disastrous effects on the human population. the extra UV rays will raise cancer rates all over the world to an unbelievable level, but no one knows what effects the cosmic rays will have on our bodies. However, the science teacher got the date wrong. It's 13.0.0.0.0 on the mayan calendar (ooh, unlucky 13 again) or December 21, 2012 on our calendar.

You're right about not knowing exactly what happens before an eruption, but it is not just al media hype. In the past 30 years, the yearly earthquake rate was about 1,100. If the same number of quakes happen every week as they did last week, then that number will skyrocket to 21,000 quakes this year. And last time a supervolcano erupted, it did kill off 90% of the world's population. but this time, there is a larger supervolcano, and there are other factors at work.

My opinion is that a combination of catastrophic events is going to happen soon, but no one can predict the exact timing. And it is not going to completely wipe out the population, because some paranoid groups are going to hide in a nuclear fallout shelter. After that, the only problem is going to be inbreeding causing mutated people. :D

The fact that so many of you guys disagree with this and thinks it's a load of crap makes me feel better,m because I am one of those dorks who's terrified of this.
Ia am gullible and whatnot.
At first I didn't care about it and thought it was BS, and now...well, I still think it's ridiculous but I'm still kinda scared. xD
I hope it's not true though of course.

I could have written this. lol

Ever since I was little I was afraid of the world ending or something catastrophic happening and killing everyone I love. I have nightmares about it. I was sure I was going to die before I hit 18 though and that didn't happen either. I'm slowly accepting the fact that if something bad does happen there's nothing I can do about it and it, too, shall pass. Like most humans, I'm terrified of change. Well, major changes anyway.

I can see how a major catastrophy would be a good thing though. Just think of all the stupid and pointless people that the human race has spawned. Just look at what our species is doing to this planet! It'll be painful, but I think the world would be a better place without us. Well most of us anyway. We're overpopulated as is.

I totally agree. A new beginning would be nice. I just wish someone would have the facts to talk me out of believing this, it's becoming hard to sleep.

Yellowstone update:
as of a day ago, the earthquakes seem to be subsiding. Experts are more closely examining these quakes, and they are finding that they are too closely gathered and not sourced deep enough nor of enough magnitude for them to be caused by volcanic activity. Instead, they seem to be caused by seismic movements.
