48/2(9+3) = (48/2)*(9+3) = 24*12 = 288

parenthesis first
48÷2(12)=
since Division and multiplication are the next step solve left to right
24(12)=288

the answer is therefore 2... the way the problem is written makes it easy to assume that going left to right is the most logical way to solve it...
