This is why I say it is a troll... It's put on many sites and usually the results lead to arguments...

I myself have no issue admitting I am wrong... I do see the logic in both answers however if given the problem, I would still say that the answer is 2.... It's how I see the problem...

Math is a matter of perception to an extent...

Well, the whole argument whether the multiplication or division is done first... it's all based on how you read the problem... some read it as a single fraction others see them as separate fractions resulting in two different answers... There might not be a single right answer...

__48__
2(9+3)

__48__
2(12)

__48__
24

the answer is therefore 2... the way the problem is written makes it easy to assume that going left to right is the most logical way to solve it...

Well if the problem was written like that i would agree..BUT.. its not..

Pemdas says parenthesis first (thats whats inside only)
then its division and multiplication left to right.
so
after 9+3
ist essentially

48÷2*12

solved from left to right

I just put it into my TI-83 graphing calculator exactly as it was posted and it said 288, that's how I got my answer haha

I think it's interesting that the people that answered 2 are all from the north and midwest. I wonder if it's been taught differently in different areas of the country?

It might be... It'd be interesting to do research on and find out... Nice observation, Kristi!

My husband says 2, too. We went to different schools in different towns.
He also put it into his casio FX300W calculator and got 2.

This is how he put it in: 48 divided by (sorry, no divided key on my computer) 2(9+3) That came up as 2.

If you add an x after the two, then it came up as 288.

When you use google calculator on the computer, it looks like 48/2(9+3) which is why it came up as 288. It needed a regular divided by sign.

More entertaining... less fight causing. Nobody is to make "D'awwww" noises at me when they simplify it or I'll reach through the computer to end them.
