It has seriously been a long time since they have been available to the public... Has anyone done anything with them??? Have the genetics even been sorted out yet???

I I was talking to someone the other day and said the same thing. Someone should be producing something with them, maybe not for sale but at least a few teaser pics here or there.

There's actually quite a bit being done with the black pearls. First off the people that have the black pearls need to fix what everyone else did that was wrong. Gotta take the Hypo Melanism out of them so that way they can truly develop their black coloration. I know that some of the BP's have been crossed into other dark lines as well to help with that issue.

I personally bought a het BP Male that will be sent to a friend that will be paired with hets and visuals.

I like to look at the Black Pearl as I do the White and Yellow. We have to fix the screw ups of the originators so that way they are the best they can be.

To be honest, I really was not diggin them for a while... While I do not think this is the way to produce an all black leo I think it can be a cool project in the right hands... Get some of the brown out of them...

Ryan,
Is it for sure a recessive or is it still speculation as to how the genetics are actually working???

Gregg,

In all findings thus far it has been found to be recessive. BUT at this point in time it's not 100% untill the het x het hatchlings come out. If you happened to check out Craigs newly updated site you will find that on his collection page there are ZERO Black Pearl projects on it. Either he made his money and ran or is going to make a serperate page for the Black Pearls has yet to be seen.

My theory and others theroies I feel are the most accurate as to why the BP is so brown and that is due to the Hypo trait. You take an orange hypo cross it to a black (hyper melanistic) gecko and you get brown. I have nothing buy faith that in the right hands we can get a true black gecko. It will take MANY generations though.

As far as what to cross into the BP I have a few ideas of how to help increase the melanin but those I will keep to myself till I start working with the BP myself.

I never was that excited about the BP at the current stage but it seems like with the right breeding strategy that it could be one amazing gecko. I also think that there are other BP's out there besides what Urban Gecko has and/or sold. I could be very wrong though.

It is weird that the Black Pearl is not mention on the site what so ever when it was the most expensive gecko last year. It does seem really suspicious considering the web site was completely re-done recently. I am NOT saying anything but the ONYX looks similar to the BP. If they had the ONYX for 4 years already then that would of been my first selection to breed to the BP when it was acquired.

Well I guess I didn't know it was a TUG snow since they just said it came from their line of snows. I thought i may of been a byproduct out of the project and not a snow. I guess you helped me figure that out stripe king! thank you!

this is just my opinion, but i honestly thing the "Black Pearl" was just a few dark geckos and good marketing. I would like to see what a BP juvie that hatched last year, will look like next year. I have a feeling that it will look a lot like a normal more than anything. I agree that a true "black" gecko will take years to produce through selective line breeding.

I agree, they simply look like dirty normals to me... I just can't see the appeal, personally. I would much prefer to concentrate on bright colors and strong, distinct contrast.

I completely agree. The Black Pearls were a mess when TUG received them, Craig told me so him self.
Some of the things they had been paired to were a complete waste, Hypos, Patternless. Anyone who went to school would know adding yellow or yellowy-green to Black is going to muddy the colour.
I have no doubt though that this can be overcome over time.
Whether other people have had very brown BP's i do not know (no one else seems to want to share things) however what i see is certainly not brown but certainly not solid black. None the less they are beautiful and really must be seen in person to appreciate them. Any one who has been lucky enough to do so, will i'm sure agree.

I have emailed TUG numerous times throughout the tail end of last year and throughout this year asking for an update on THEIR findings, however i have not received a single reply as of yet. So you are not the only ones in the dark, even people who have purchased them cant get any info on them. Which would be nice seen as the buyers are working with very limited numbers.

Quite interested as to who you purchased the het male from?

Although it was a while ago, not too much has changed. I will work on getting more pictures but with it being winter over here in the UK its not really ideal for taking "natural light photos" and i don't have very good studio equipment.

This topic had me intrigue for a while and I just start looking at TUG's website and under collection area there is a project named Onyx. They seems to be some sort of black pearls crossed to their TUG Snow but I can't tell for sure. The only thing for sure is that Black Pearls is no anymore on their website.
