not sure, but i think it's illegal to ship roaches out of state. people do it all the time. but just so you know if they come knocking on your door. might be a good idea to check local regulations and stuff.

hmm..business/website tips..

Well, you should definitely have a caresheet on your website that you write yourself. Many caresheets are available on the 'net, but you should have your own just so that buyers know that you know how to properly take care of your reptiles as well (plus it's good to have your own that you can print out and send with each gecko that you sell).

You will need to outline and explain all of your terms, conditions, and policies. A list of helpful reptile related links should also be provided. Do you know how you are going to be shipping and do you have the supplies? You will need to figure out all of that info as well. You can order your reptile shipping supplies from Superior Enterprise.

Here is a thread discussing what to buy from Superior Enterprise: http://www.geckoforums.net/showthread.php?t=20343

Some places also require you to get a business license to be able to sell your geckos from home (We had to obtain a Privelage Sales Tax License). You will also need to find out if this is an allowable activity within your residential zoning district, and if so, what permits are required to conduct this activity.

I can't think of anything else off the top of my head right now, but best wishes to you and starting your business :)

There are sooo many new breeders every year, that it is becoming increasingly more difficult for established breeders to sell geckos. Noone wants to be a gecko keeper anymore?

My advice: I would not consider it a business, especially just starting out. I have been doing this for three years, and still can not consider it a business myself. Sales have slowed dramatically over the last two years, for me.

It is just a hobby for most of us, there really is not enough income to make much profit... and you can`t very well call it a "business", not making anything from it.

It is a fun hobby! Just don`t over-do it, if you actually do get into breeding.

I would think that it would be the established breeders that more people would buy from, not new ones from each year who have no online selling reputation yet.. ?

The only reason I would call it a business, even if you lose more than you make, is because we had to obtain an actual license because it is a taxable activity. Is it a get-rich-quick-scheme? Of course not, and no person should expect it to be. However, making any profit, whether it ends up being surplus or debt, is technically business. But anyway, it is a very fun/exciting/wonderful hobby indeed :D :main_yes:

I have spent so much money on my reptiles, I think it will be many years before I make an actual profit. 90% of the money I make goes back into animals, caging, supplies, food, etc.

That is how we picture things to go - we put a lot of money into everything and do not expect any profit really.. We have our own jobs, this is just a side project :) and we've found that we are very passionate for these little guys. We already plan to use the money for the things you said, more cages, supplies, food, etc. :)
