So I was not able to make the appointment yesterday and my mother wanted to know how much it is going to be so I haven't gotten another appointment unless she wants to pay for them. It is going to cost 60 for each and plus medication, which can vary. But Caith is doing better, he is eating more and his tail is growing back slowly.
To be quite honest, from a veterinary nurse's point of view those prices sound about right. If he needed to be hospitalized you could be looking at anywhere between $200- $400. But this is a living thing, and in the pictures he looks quite uncomfortable. It's really not fair to him. Please reconsider talking to mom about how important this is. I am glad he is doing better, but I am certain he still needs medical attention. Someone else mentioned just phoning one of the reptile vets, ANY reptile vet actually. And if you can't speak to to vet himself, ask to speak to a certified veterinary nurse. They should be more than willing to give you more advice.
I am saddened that you couldn't follow through on getting your leos to a vet due to financial constraints, or seek professional advice by telephone. I have heard a lot of vets are willing to consult for free by phone. I sincerely hope you are successful in treating her on your own. Best wishes for your leo!
It is not that fact that we are not able to pay for them to both get checked, it is just the matter of my parents not giving anything about them and letting me get them checked out proffesionally. I think they need to be but I do not have enough money myself because I don't work much at my job and I ddn't work last week for my sister. If I had the money I would have gone to the appointment if my mother dropped off the car seat the other day. And if she didn't I would have gone today but I don't have the cash to do it myself. I only have enough for one gecko right now and I need both checked on. So my mother wants me to see if he progresses, but I doubt he will because I think he does have something wrong with him. So I am just going by her orders...I am to afraid to step up to my parents because my dad can get mean and so can my mother.
if you only have enough money for one, i would suggest testing Caith, the worst of the two. if there is something wrong with him then you can worry about checking out the second one. even if your parents dont care about your geckos let them know they are creatures as well as dogs and cats are and need professional care as much as our furry friends do.
he needs help asap.
do you have any pictures of the female?
I can take pictures of her tomorrow, she looks perfectly normal and very fat and healthy. But I will post them tomorrow because I would rather take new pictures of her then post old ones.
As for getting him checked out, if I did that I wouldn't have enough money for medication so I may try and convince my mother tomorrow because she said two days and tomorrow will be day two.
I wish you luck as well. It seems like a sticky situation. Your heart is really in the right place, and I respect that. Instead of confronting mom/dad directly, try mentioning it during dinner....I always found my folks responded better over food. Doesn't everybody? And if you have to, use an analogy. They wouldn't let the family dog, or even YOU, THEIR child, get that sick before being seen. It's the same thing. Better yet, just print out this thread and show it to whoever you get along with better.
So I still have no cash for the vet but Caith seems to be looking better then when I took the first picture. When I get out my camera tonight I will post up a picture of how he looks. He is even taking food out of my hand, he is starting to become healthy in my terms. His tail is even growing back, I am so happy!
A suggestion... get a list of vets in your nearby area and call them saying you just want to get a fecal sample tested (the price you said, sounds about right) - ask if it's possible to pay this at a later date and in installments, also if he does need medication, get them to write a prescription out for you (they have to do this) and phone around getting an estimate on the price of the medication.
The vets I go to are very laid back about it and I don't have to pay until I'm ready, they don't hassle me and I can pay in installments when I want (they are expensive though - which is a catch).
I know it's stressful and horrible, but you do need to get the fecal samples done ASAP, once you know what's wrong then you can sort out the rest (it takes 7-10 days for the sample to get back anyway).
Hope this helps, if you need anything else give me a shout xx
