How do you tell if a gecko is getting to heavy? I think our gecko looks great but my son thinks he is getting too fat. Is that possible?
When we got him from the pet store in April he had a skinny little tail. Now he has a big fat one. How much should a gecko weigh?

Yep

Yep Geckos can get too fat and that is not good for them.

I do not recall the weight for an Adult Gecko I think it is 65 Grams.

The Tail is where they store their fat so it should be of a good size anyway.

But, since they do not get much exercise there is the possibility that you are overfeeding.

But, that also depends on what you are feeding too.:D

Yes, geckos can get too fat; but a thick tail is a good thing. If you show a pic of your gecko we can tell you if he is too fat or not.

Ok let me figure out how to take post a picture and I will post one.
Do you want one looking down on her or from the side

She eats: 6 lrg crickets once a week, 6 giant meal worms 2-3 times a week
and 3 wax worms 1 time a week. we basically feed her every other night
alt wax worms and mealworms with crickets once a week.

Thank you for your help!!

Any form of pictures would be useable. Geckos can definitely be fat, however, fat tails are good. If you gecko has little "bubbles" in its arm pits, its also nothing to e too alarmed about. If you tell me how old your gecko is i coud figure out if your diet is correct.

She looks good to me. We have one that we have had to cut back on his food. We decided he needed a diet when I could hear him crabbing while climbing into his hide. If you are concerned about making your gecko overweight my suggestion would be to change the waxworms to an occasional treat, and go with something a little less fatty on those days.

Between two terrariums
I have one around 2years old. He's 88grams currently.
Is that overweight?
Males get bigger than females. Though of course, if he's huge (lengthwise) and that weight, he may be skinny, and if he's smallish and that weight, he may be fat. :tongue3: If he doesn't seem obviously overweight, I'd wager he isn't.

Doesn't look fat to me at all! If you're worried about her getting too fat, I would cut out the waxworm from her diet; crickets are a good replacement.

Don't worry at all! However, when the gecko gets older i suggest cutting back on the food and not feeding any wax worms

What would be good things to feed if you think your gecko is getting a bit on the tubby side?

Yoshi is rather large, last time i weighed him he was about 100g. But he a little over 10 inches long from how good i can measure him, he never stays still ;)

He used to eat mostly mealworms, between 6-8 in one sitting...sometimes as many as 15.

Recently he seems to have gone off mealworms and sometimes only seems to want to eat every few days, but today and yesterday he ate 1 roach each night :) Are roaches a better alternative to get his weight down a little without making him hungry? In the 7 months we've owned him hes only eaten about 4 waxworms.
