This one just popped out from APTOR het Eclipse x Abyssinian. No trace of Eclipse eye, but he has the white nose so I'm pretty sure he is a normal eyed (0% snake eye) Eclipse. Clutchmate has pipped but I can't tell what it is yet.

I've been very confused about the eclipse since I thought that what makes an eclipse is the eye trait. If that's the case, wouldn't a normal eyed eclipse be a contradiction in terms? I've hatched out 3 babies with the same coloring (and I don't remember about the noses) from hypo Mack snow x tang albino stripe (2 of them are here: http://geckoforums.net/showthread.php?t=62997) with very dark eyes but not eclipse eyes.

Yes and no. The Eclipse eye is an extremely variable trait, ranging anywhere from full coverage to snake eyes to no coverage at all. My two snake eyed babies are fading out to 0% coverage, but this is the first I have hatched with 0% coverage at birth. If you look at Kristi's recent threads she also has some normal eyed Eclipses.

So what makes it an eclipse? A white nose?

It is a genetic mutation with an extremely variable phenotype. The white nose appears consistently and can be helpful in identifying an eclipse when the eyes are not a reliable indicator like in my new hatchling or differentiating a Super Snow vs. Super Snow Eclipse.

Very interesting Tony. I too have hatched some non eclipsed eye babies this year from 2 eclipse breeders. The weird thing with eclipses is that I have never had a full eclipse eye fade with time but most/all snake eye eclipses will fade a little if not all the way. Why would the fading only occur in snake eyes and not full eclipse eyes? Tony you are responsible for finding this all out for us...thanks :). Your Aby project is proving more confusing than anticipated

ALL of mine born with full eclipse eyes have faded to snake eyes in at least one eye, none have stayed 100/100. Abs are definitely confusing, they do not seem to work as originally described but there is SOMETHING funky about them.

The first one has a white nose and the pattern of a Eclipse.
I think he or she is a Eclipse.
I have hatch a lot of Eclipse this Year and also a Eclipse where you can't see anything.
But when they get older You see a little black stripe in the eye what normal geckos dont have.

succes whit it and keep us update!

Love the babies, Tony!!! This was my first year hatching some with no eclipse eyes. Last year I had some where one eye was normal and the other eclipse. I think it's kind of cool.:)

Re Abyssinian and 0% Eclipse Eyes

Hi

Very interested in the thread and the comments made.

I would be interested to know what you believe the Abyssinian to be. There was a lot of debate some time ago in the UK about them being a variation on the Eclipse gene brought about by the extensive breeding for the Diablo Blanco project, but it all went quiet shortly after.

Regards

Mark

They are definitely an Eclipse variant, I believe they may be a hypomelanistic form.
