Just a bit of a rant..

Trying to get a pair of geckos off C-List. The guy selling them describes himself as a "former breeder" so I sort of assumed he knew something about how to care for them. But the more I learn, the less I like. Says they've been housed together their whole lives, a male and a female. They come with their 20L, sand, sticks, and "various other cage items." Says they're 1.5 years old. Also says "no, the female's not pregnant. They're too young to breed."

....

Oh dear.

He said he'd send me pics of them in a few hours when he gets home. I'm so scared I'm going to find a couple of emaciated geckos...

Just...grr!

I hear that.

I hate it when people want over $50 for a normal emaciated gecko because that's what they paid at the pet store... right when it was a baby without numerous health issues.

I wish I were a billionaire... I would have two huge rescue and research facilities; one for leos and one for parrots

I hate seeing all those reptiles on CL in horrible condition. It makes me so sad and angry sometimes.
The absolute worst thing I ever saw (I really wanted to just smack the girl) was a skinny leo living on aspen shavings in a decent sized tank with a mouse as a roommate!!! Yes, it's true! She said that if she didn't find a home for them soon she would let them go and she was sure they would do fine in the wild.

I actually got a male and female that had been living together their entire lives on sand for $20. They actually had the opposite problem; they were extremely overweight. She would just dump a bunch of crickets in once a week. They of course had stuck shed and missing toes, but they are doing great now.

Good luck with that guy. Hopefully they will be better than your imagining!!

Oh noes! Super super skinny. Pencil thin tails. A pretty tremper male, and a darker SHTCT female that I think would be bright with proper care. I think I might get them just to see if I could save them, but I'm going to try to talk him down on the price

I'm getting them this weekend and just praying it's fixable. They're really pretty.

Male

Male IS Tremper, isn't he? (Morgan is poss het for both Tremper and Bell and I've been looking for males of both strains to prove her out. So it looks like this is next year's project for me, if the male is in good enough shape to bulk up by then)

Poor babies!

Thank heaven that they are finally going to someone who knows about leos! I doubt they had much time left in that home.

I can't comment much on morphs as I don't really get them all LOL

Thanks, Nancy :)

I think I decided on the name Asher for the male and Rosalie for the female :main_yes:

I'm picking them up tomorrow afternoon

so glad you got them... poor things..

I have never seen any on CL...must be the area I am in.

I very rarely see them. And I'm one of the only people in my area who know how to actually care for them, it seems. So when I see them I feel like it's my job to rescue them lol

Like I keep telling my parents, at least it's not puppies :p

Ok. So I got the geckos. Female weighs 22g, male weighs 24g. Male is blind, but I think it might be reversible. He has stuck shed in his eyes and possibly an infection. He's seeing a vet Monday.

I fed them both some Jump-Start as soon as we got settled in and they eagerly lapped it up, but no one has tried to eat a mealie yet. The male, I think, will have to be hand fed until he can see..if he'll ever see again.

Named them :)

Asher:

Morph? He's some sort of albino, I know. Can anyone tell by the colors/pattern what it is, or do we need to wait until we can get his eyes clear?

Zaira:

What's she? She's got a bit of a carrot tail, which you can't see in this pic. No spots on her except for the very top of her head and on her tail. But she's not a tang...or if she is she's the darkest tang I've ever seen. Any ideas?

I think Zaira was a SHTCT, just realy faded from her diet, early breeding when she wasn't ready, and stress. Asher looks like a Tremper to me, but could of been a bell thats faded for the same reasons as Zaira. I'm glad there in your home now!!!!

I emailed the man I got them from and explained all of their issues in detail and what I think caused it. Then I asked him if he wanted updates on them once they started recovering. He said he did.
